Hello, I recently brought my puppy (GSD) home from the breeder and he was being fed Diamond chicken flavor puppy food. I researched the brand and found that some dogs in the east coast died from it. I looked at Ed's website and it recommends natural dog food, ie. INNOVA. So i purchased a bag and i am gradually switching foods. My puppy though is not eating either!, Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Or does anyone know of a natural dog food with better taste? Thank you

I would take him to the vet first. Not eating, sleeping, and pooping (all comfortably) are all vet-call issues, as much as an injury is. Is he drinking? You'll want that info too when you call.
Then, IMO, if he's A-OK and just not hungry yet, I'd add something yummy to the food you have chosen, like a little bit of your dinner meat mixed through.
I really would call the vet, though, first, if he is actually not eating.

Thank you, I did take him to the vet. He got a good bill of health. I am wondering if there is adjusting time since pulled away from his environment, I put some chinken broth in a container and wa spouring some in his food, didn't owrk very well. I wonder if the INNOVA food is too much for him.
So do you know if there is a adjusting period and/or should I feed him three times instead of two. also would you leave the food in his crate?

Couple of things could be happening: a)adjusting to new home b)doesn't like the food - have you considering going to an all raw diet? If not, try adding some fresh raw meat to his kibble, hamburger or cut up chicken - and no, it is not advised to let your puppy free feed. After 20 minutes, pick up remaining food. Good luck.

My puppy is also on Innova. When I swiched I started off slow, but with in 3 days she was completely switched, and had firm stools the whole time. I mix her Innova with raw turkey from the grocery store, and warm water, and she gobbles it down. My puppy also eats in her crate so there are no distractions. However if she hasnt eaten it all with in 20 min. what is left over goes in the trash. And I wash her dish in hot soppy water.
BTW I have an Aussie not a German Shephard.

Frank,
I agree with others on RAW. But be careful with RAW, you have to provide a complete balance meal. Ed talks about it. try to get this DVD Puppy- 8 WEEKS TO 8 MONTHS.
Few people feed DRY FOOD mixed with 1/4 or 1/2 of RAW.
Well my guy is a big eater. So can't take his example. But lately I feed him about 2 cups of WELLNESS with about 1/2-1.00 LB of lamb/ chicken/ meaty bones.
As you have a puppy... I know WELLENESS WORKED GREAT WITH MY DOG DURING THE CHANGE OF HOUSE HOLD. Try mixing WELLNESS(IF YOU BUY IT) WITH SOME LAMB/ CHICKEN/ EGG.
I am sure he will eat. Give him lots of water though.

there are many opinions on feeding, but I would not add raw meat to kibble, as it takes kibble longer to digest than raw meat and the bacteria on the meat may sit in the dog too long and cause complications (my understanding from leerburg and other sources) If the dog just doensn't like his kibble, some cooked meat may be ok to add. Hamburger grease as a dressing, or olive oil, gets my dog to eat her veggies -- she also loves salmon oil as well. The main thing, though, is that it is probably more advisable to feed kibble and raw combinations at different meals.

I'm sorry if it sounded as if I suggested that.....when I said "your dinner meat" I meant leftovers (cooked).
I have never read anything to debunk the explanation above of why *not* to feed raw and kibble in the same meal, and have in fact read many authoritative vet sites agreeing with it.

i was responding to Tina this time, not you Connie I read the thing about not feeding raw meat and kibble in a few places and can make some sense of it; however, I know people who do it and have not had problems. I just play on the safe side and don't.
