Two weeks ago I totalled my Mazda MPV minivan--ran off the road into a redwood stump, flipped over, and spun around. Both I and my GSD Oka walked away from the accident.
If you check out this picture of the van here, you'll see that Oka is alive today because he was in a dog crate in the back of the van (facing backwards). It was just an ordinary VariKennel 500, but it saved his life.
If there's anyone on this board who isn't convinced of how important a crate is when you're carrying your dog in a car, take a look. The life you save could be your dog's!

Thank you for sharing that, Dave. I'm glad you and Oka are both safe and sound. I must admit I get a little complacent myself, and it's just this type of reminder that I need.
Would you recommend tying the crate down as well? I have a Volvo wagon with tiedowns in the cargo area, but haven't used them.

Thanks, Lisa.
As for tiedowns, Oka's crate wasn't tied down, but it was a pretty tight fit behind the second row of seats, and had no place to go. My opinion, FWIW, is that the tie-downs, being intended merely to prevent cargo from shifting under normal driving conditions, probably won't stand up to a collision, although they might act as shock absorbers in the fraction of a second before they broke. In other words, it couldn't hurt, and might help.

Thanks for posting Dave. Very happy to hear that you and Oka are both ok. How is he feeling about going for rides? Some dogs can be pretty twitchy about it after an accident, even happens to K9s.
You are probably preaching to the choir a bit here since I suspect most workin dawg folks do crate. But you never know who just may be reading this and be moved to start using the crate in the car.
Love those aluminum ones, aren't they awesome?

WOW Dave, I'm glad you 2 are both ok.
Lisa's comment is right on target. I am currently driving w/out a kennel. I have been meaning to get one, but I need one that will fit in my Astro van with all of the seats in, so I don't know where to find one that will fit my van and my dogs.( preferably opening on the side. I see midwest make a side opening kennel, but it is too big to fit my space!
But, now I will look even harder to find one, as you have validated my fears! Keep safe!

Dave, glad to hear you and your Dog are O.k!Crates are a life saver for sure.We know someone that got in a bad accident, was in critical condition, and her highly protective Rott.wouldn't let parimedics near her.Another good reason to use a crate.Jeanette, have you ever looked into those vehicle guards that fit behind the rear seats of s.u.v's and minivan's,if it is impossible to find a crate to fit your van?Don't know much about them as regards to safety, maybe other people would have thoughts on them.Just an idea.

A crate will not fit in my Honda Civic, so I use the harness that is made to keep dogs connected to the seatbelt.A doggy seatbelt, its not a crate but works well if you have a small car.

This is an issue I've considered as well. EMTs are not required to put themselves in harm's way to get to you when your protective, now highly stressed dog is menacing them. I'd anticipate a dog being shot this way. I'm suspecting that if crated securely, and wearing current tags, AC could remove the dog safely.
We tried those gate panel things, it was disaster. Unless you drill holes in the roof or somehow weld them into place, don't waste your $$ unless you are transporting a coupla shelties.

I have a midwest grate divider that works fine, and my monster does not ride quietly.... I actually went through a vet, a behavoirist and everything else I could think of to get him to relax in the vehicle... he rides much better now, but still shows displacement anxiety...
The dividers work fine if they are installed properly. I don't think I would count on them to protect the dog in a crash though. In my case there is no other choice to use the cargo area of my car, they do not make a crate that will fit.
