I'm trying to get a three year old GSD a Bh. She has what I would call good ball drive(would rather chase her ball than eat or sleep) When I give her the "Hier" command she comes in fast enough but sits too far out. I'm holding the reward high on my chest. If I toss the ball behind me while she's coming in she doesn't slow down a bit. I've tried pulling her in closer and then rewarding but after five time of doing that without improvement we moved on to something else. Any suggestions?
While I'm talking recall, her's is lousy. If I don't have "her ball" and we haven't started the training session, its "I've better things to do" . I'm using a long line and she is very collar wise. all I have to do is bend over to pick it up and she's under my feet. If I don't have a line on her I better have her ball if I want to see her again. My other two dogs' recall is excellent because I started recall training ten minutes after they got off the tit. This girl is about three and I don't think she ever learned it.

Maybe you need to go back a few steps to heeling on lead. When you are heeling with ball under chin, back up real fast & say "here". If she is following the ball she will end up right where you want her. Do it over & over. She nneds to know where "here" always is. If she is on a down say a leash length in front. Call her (ball under chin) & back up baby steps so she stops practically on top of you. Stroke her under the chin. You should almost be bending back so her chin rests on your stomach. Mainstain eye contact for a second before you praise her. Build up to like a minute before you praise her.r a second? then throw the ball. Keep doing that so she knows how close you want her (if you've already done this, sorry to waste the space!
I would try what Susan says, tuck a ball under your chin BUT I wouldn't throw the ball to reward her. Lift your chin and let the ball drop to her when she is in the correct position.
Otherwise, the reward comes away from the front position you want......which is not what you want the dog to expect.
You can also spit food for her to catch, when she is exactly where you want her. This works well because you can do quick reps without having to out the ball.
The chin drop worked great <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> She/we figured it out. Then I thought if under the chin is good then balancing it on top of my head would be better <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> anyway, she came in close the first time and closer the next, that problem solved <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> thanks guys. Any suggestions for recalling her in general? She's still "No toy,No work" If I got the long line on her she comes when called and that's it. I've had her for about three weeks now
Hehe...that fusion of my cervical spine with the titanium plate ended my "chin tucking" days. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
And I can't spit hot dogs worth a hoot...so it's string cheese for me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
well, I have to put the ball between my second and first chin <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Hey kewl guys thanks...just came here to see if i could get some good pointers.
My girl who is nearly 4 will come (which is my command to the front) but is like Dennis's Girl...sits to far away. I have tried bringing her in closer with the lead with no avail..
Anyway im bout to go give them a run and will give the string cheese a go as she is not a real bally dog.
Although we have made progress,...she now has her own kong toy that she likes to cart around when the others are playing.
