I have a problem with my 11 month old male Dobe. He likes to eat wood. Then he throws it up at 4 am. He stopped doing it for a while because of the snow on the ground, but now that it's melted, he's doing it again. It's almost a nightly occurance. I know this is not good for him. We can't watch him every single time we let him outside, and I have even put off installing a doggie door for him because of this. Any help or suggestions would bt greatly appreciated.
Well, other than watching him like a hawk or moving to Maine (we still have snow) I would suggest you get him used to a muzzle. One of the vented plastic or wire types would work fine and keep him from snacking on his trips outside(which I am assuming are potty breaks)
So far as the doggie door goes, I don't know what to tell you there, you can't make him wear a muzzle all the time.
Hopefully someone else will have a better suggestion.
i had the same problem with my puppy. i poured a ton of tobasco on the spots he likes to chew and haven't had a problem since. he was getting into the fire wood out back. i had to do the same thing with all the door stoppers. he would take off that little plastic cap.

well I too have the same issue with my GSD. He just has a taste for wood. My only resolve has been to pick up any piece of wood in the yard. I do this daily. He still finds an occasional piece of wood to eat. At one point he went so far as to ripping small branches on trees. I have since trimmed the trees so that he can not reach any branches to tear off for his snack. I thought all was under control as far as branch/wood eating fetish of his but not long ago he was carrying around a rose bush branch. so now those are out of reach too. I did not think of removing those since they have thorns on the branches but that did not stop him.
No snow here to hide the wood stuff so still looking for a better resolve then picking up the yard daily. BTW he loves tobasco sauce, i found out when trying to discourage him from eating wood.
I too having a GSD with a wood fetish. However, it comes out the *other* end several hours later...ack!!
I resorted to going out with him several times with his E collar on and just correcting him when he'd start mouthing wood pieces...he has since lost interest in wood. Problem solved.
