My 7 month old dobe just sprouted this small brown circular "thing" on his ear. I use the term "thing" because I can't really describe it. It's small, light brown, almost oval and it's attached to his hair, and growing (it seems) from his ear. I can feel it through his ear under his hair. I gave him a bath last night, and it wasn't there then or this morning. Now in the afternoon getting him ready for dinner, my wife noticed it. They were outside today in the yard playing and stuff. So whatever it is, it "grew" between this morning and now. I'll see if I can get a pic up soon. I just called the vet and they wouldn't give me an answer over the phone, and I have to bring him in tomorrow, but I can't wait for an answer! Please help!
Alright, I have decent pic, though you can't really see much at all. My camera doesn't zoom that close. Either way, I can't even figure out how to upload the pic!!
You have to upload that pic to a link w/a URL, then post that. Are you sure it isn't a tick? Keep in mind that they don't look like bugs when they're swollen; you can't see their heads, and their legs are pretty tough to see. Depending on what kind it is, it'll be grayish brown, smooth, and you should be able to "flip" it around, b/c it's head is the only part actually under the dog's skin. That's the only thing I can think of that can grow overnight. If it is, alcohol can help remove it b/c it can make the tick pull back out of the skin, but be very careful to remove the head also; if you've never done this before, it may be worthwhile to seek a vet's help. Lyme disease and others risks increase the longer the tick is implanted. Let us see that pic and good luck. Ears are a common place for ticks to attach.
Now that you describe it like that, I think it just may be a tick. I can "flip" it like you said, and I can feel it under his skin. It is a smooth oval and light brown/tan. I would like to try getting it out, but I'm afraid I might do something wrong. How can I be sure I have the head in the right position to grab it? And should I use my fingers or some tweezers?
Never try to remove a tick with your fingers! If the alcohol doesn't make it back out, try some vaseline, it will suffocate the tick and it will have to back out. Then remove it with the tweezers.
