I have a question for you folks in ref. what to expect from an aging K-9. Dog (GSD)is 9 yrs old - has worked the streets for the last 6 1/2 yrs. The last 6 months has slowed down ALOT. Has lost alot of it's focus & intensity and the start of some old age stiffening of the hip and right rear joints. This part I can deal with and take care of - my other problem is now when I let the dog out to run and empty, when I call to "heel or come" I am ignored. I know the hearing is OK, for when I have a reward and whisper commands, very quick to accomodate.
How do I take care of the ignoring part, short of a e-collar just to get the attention???
In my opinion, many dogs (psd or not) begin to avoid situations that may be painful hence the "ignoring".. If his joints are really bothering him he may choose to ignore you because he knows being told to sit or down or ? hurts!!
I would start in the most obvious place, what does this dog eat and is he on any supplements.??
A grain free diet can do wonders for dogs with joint inflammation, adding salmon oil and MSM is great too..Most people jump on the Rimadyl bandwagon and I think many of our "old " dogs are aging way before their time due to inferior diets..
It just seems coincidental that he ignores commands but will listen to a whisper when it means a reward....
As far as feeding, it consists of Eukanuba Senior, with added supplements of MSN, Grand Flex, Vit C, B12, Kelp and alfalfa and some raw liver twice a week.
I will be aling you sometime this weekend to eval that puppy. I will also round up some info for you on chang diets and joint pain in dogs i have. I will send it off to you or bring it down to you.

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
Mark - if you want some good advice - listen to Cindy. I ahve been after her for a year to write a book on Nutrition. She knows as much as anyone on this topic. I am closing this thread as she has said what needs to be said here.
