My friend is planning on getting a Bull terrier and he is asking me a lot of questions about protection training. I encourage him to get invovled because he is that kind of guy (he's a boxer so this would suit him and also I could use someone my age to work with (everybody else is around 30 or older)
My Question is: Is a Bull terrier a good "Protection" dog. He is not interested in GSD and both of us aren't familier w/Belgium Malinois. Anybody know anything on Bull Terriers?

Of the half dozen or so different terriers I've had, the Bully is, without a doubt, the most thick headed, dense, who gives a $#!+, I'm going to a party wether you want to or not type dog I've ever had. I belonged to a BT club at the time, and mine was WAY above average in obedience, only because worked at it. I seriously doubt I'll ever own another. Fact is, I'm SURE I wont.

Daniel, I happen to really love Bull Terriers myself, but they're NOT a breed for inexperienced owners (!!!) Some are clowns, others are shy, but a BT with an excellent temperament AND solid nerves will be naturally owner-protective -- However, unless your friend has TONS of "bully breed savvy" I'd advise him not to go there, personally.

Ha, thanks guys, I'm not sure but I think he has owned one before (i've been freinds with him since early childhood), he is just looking for another right now and will buy one. He has been looking for a breeder for almost two years so I believe he knows what he is doing.
So just to make sure I know what you are say. The dog WILL do good as a protection dog but needs some strict leadership, right? Any body have a good website to find BT's or read up on them. I'll definetley show him this site and any links.

From what you've posted on this thread so far, your friend doesn't really sound all that knowledgeable about Bull Terriers to me -- In the wrong hands, or with some "macho moron" owner (not that your pal's one of those!) this breed can be more trouble than they're worth.

That is about the most accurate description of the breed I've ever heard. But I do so love the little critters! If all I wanted was a companion to amuse me, Bull Terrier would be the breed for me.

No my friend is not a "Macho man" at all nor a meat head. Just a regular guy loves a bit of "action" if you will but he has always avoided a fight as much as he can. Very respectful guy and has his head on his shoulders.
So If you don't recomend a Bull terrier, than what would be a good dog for him to start out with? He wanted to get the dog as a puppy because I told him about the whole imprinting phase (just mentioned but really didn't advice anything). Also price range for a BT, how much can he expect to spend for a good one, $500-$1000?.
I don't know if I should make him change his mind on what type of dog to get but I guess I could advice him on diff. breeds he could look at, like GSD's.

The best advice? Your friend should be actively searching out the answers to these type of questions.... Does he want a specific breed or does he want a dog that can do the sport? That is going to make a whole heck of a difference.
Take me for example. I have Australian Cattle Dogs. Love the breed and will always have one. Cannot imagine life without them. I also like doing Schutzhund. Out of my 4 ACDs two can do the sport and two can't. If I was serious about the sport, I would not get an ACD. However, my love for the breed supersedes my love for the sport. I just can't make myself love a Mal or a GSD more than an ACD
So, if he wants and likes the bull terrier breed, than he should get a BT. If it is absolutely mandatory that he do the sport than I am 99.9% sure he will be disappointed. It sounds like he knows nothing about Schutzhund - it behooves him to spend some time in the sport and see if his liking for it supersedes his liking of BTs.

Your right he knows nothing about schutzhund but loves the breed alot. I ust suggested he do some protection work but I did mention schutzhund, didn't say he should do schutzhund but did suggest protection work.
I will show him these comments tomorrow at school and see if he wants to join this site so he can learn more. I think he should get the Bull Terrier but I also think he should realize what he is getting into.
Thanks everyone.
