So how do these dogs get into protection and/or Schutzhund?
How can you tell if a mut is good for protection, is it the type of dog it has in it (ex. GSD/Mal would probably be a good combo for PPD)?
And Rares, Boerboels, Alapaha Blue Blood Bull Dogs and a whole bunch of others, how do they get Sch Titles and stuff?
They're aren't any rules about breeds that can compete in Sch? How do you know a certain rare breed will exceed in protection training.
I know these questions may seem a bit complex to answer but I am interested in this because of so many breeders that say their breed has Sch background or is a protection breed.
Ummm...you train for it. At the very minimum, a dog with prey drive can be taught the Schutzhund routine. Whether it's for the higher levels or for PPD though, takes a lot more testing.
Daniel,
There are no restrictions on what breeds can compete in SchH/IPO/VPG, they just have to be able to perform the work. Although, I think the DVG had a list of 13 or so breeds that were originally approved for SchH.
I think what you're asking about is selection testing & evaluation. This is not an easy thing, not unless you have a lot of experience doing it. Kevin Shedahl has a nice Selection Test for PSDs on his website, which can be helpful.
One of the reasons why SchH, the ringsports and Police Dogs are dominated by a couple of breeds is b/c those breeds can perform the work, are selected for the work, and are known for that. Additionally, people who are serious about training and breeding aren't usually going to take the time and energy to hunt down one of the few <Insert Any Rare Breed/Mix Breed> to invest a lot of time and effort into training in hopes of succeeding.
I just thought it would be better to ask these questions in one thread instead of having a bunch of threads on pretty much the same topic. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
