Malik has his left leg in a bandage after the surgery he underwent last Thursday. http://www.illustraline.com/malik.html He's been pretty good with it, but yesterday I had to leave him alone twice for 2 hours and he managed to chew a hole in his bandage. We put a long sleeve t-shirt on him to prevent that, seems to help. However, I'm going to be out of town for 2 weeks at the end of the month, my hb will only be able to come at lunch, and I'm worried he'll chew on his wound (at that point the bandage will be off). I don't really want him to wear a cone as they are huuuge, so I wonder if anyone has some tips, or some item they bought that helps with that.
Also, if anyone has tips on how to handle a 2 months leash restriction (boredom, frustration on both parts, etc), feel free to share!
Thanks
Aude
I have seen a soft version of the plastic "cone" eliz. collar. It almost looks like a skirt attached to their neck. It doesn't help much for rear-body injuries (they can just push it out of the way), but it might work well to prevent your dog from chewing on his front leg. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to get one of these, but I know they exist. Your vet might be able to help you find one.
As for entertaining your dog during recovery - I'm also dealing with this right now. Some of the things I do with my dog are...
-I ask my dog to "work" for morsels of his food throughout the day rather than feeding it to him all at once. He has to give attention, sit, down, look or speak to get a piece of food.
-Give him chew toys like Nylabones or a kong toy filled with treats, food or whatever
-He has to "work" for the toys and treats too
It does, thanks a lot. I'll check into that skirt thing, it seems to make sense.
And good idea to make him work. I dont' want him on his feet much but he can certainly do some basic things, which will be fun for him. He looks sad, it breaks my heart...
