Clip the hair away a bit, wash away the gooey stuff with mild soap or diluted peroxide pat dry and apply some Gold Bond Powder on it (has zinc oxide powder in it and dries up and soothes hot spots really well).
Keeping the dog well brushed and free from matted undercoat is the best way to prevent but some dogs seem very prone to get hot spots. Diet can play a big role in health of the skin and coat so a change in diet helps some dogs.
Go see your vet as well..... our little dog (cairn terrier) developed "hot spots" at about age 2 and lost quite a bit of hair and had some skin damage from the scratching and biting. We went to two different vets before we found out she had thyroid disease.....now all is fine.
I brush her every day. It seems this one spot just popped up overnight. She's also on an all natural diet. Absolutely no dog food has touched her lips since she was about 11 weeks old and she's 7 months now. I did clip her hair around the spot, cleaned and peroxided it then followed with the Gold Bond powder. She doesn't bite or scratch. We'll see what happens.
A "cheap" method that a friend relayed to us, that works fast, is use plain Listerine (not the flavored version) and pour it on the hot spot. Dries it up pretty fast.
FYI, the flavored Listerine works too. Plus your dog smells minty fresh! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
