Does anyone know why my GSD's hair would be breaking off around her collar? She has a flat collar on most of the time, and a fur saver during training. I haven't noticed her scratching there much.
Does she wear the collar all the time? What I would do is not have her wear the collar all the time if that is possible, and also wash the area around he neck and put in conditioner, that should help. What kind of a collar is it-leather or nylon?
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. -Josh Billings
The name "Fur Saver" was given to the large chain collar for a reason.
I'd lose the flat collar and keep them in the fur saver. When it is kennel time, crate time, etc take it off. Otherwise my dogs are always in the fur saver collar and the fur around the neck is saved. . .compared to what other collars do.
Her tags (rabies, license, etc.) are on her nylon collar. I'll take it off. It started when I had her wearing the fur saver most of the time. We'll take that one off, too, except for training.
The problem is the flat nylon collar. It is amazing how the hair can work it's way in there and then get broken off. If you want to keep a buckle collar on (Not a bad idea for tags) go get a rolled leather collar. I have kept them on my dogs for years and have never had a problem with the hair wearing off.

The hard, rough coat on my terriers is tough to keep from breaking. The round leather collars, as per Richard, have been the only thing that doesn't break it.
