my puppy is coming up on 6 and 1/2 months, and he's finally finishing teething. He went through a big spurt a couple weeks ago where he lost 5-6 teeth in a week.
my question is how do you know if old teeth not coming out are going to be a problem? he has two canines (both on the same side) that have not come out yet. the new ones are in, and the old ones don't seem to be interfering. i can wiggle them by hand, but they don't seem ready to come out. they've been this way for about a week.
should i try and remove them, or leave them be unless it looks like they're getting sore or something?
If they are loose they will come out on their own. Better to let them come out while he is gnawing on a nice meaty bone than to accidentally inflict some pain while you have your fingers in his mouth. That could come back to bite you later ... pun intended.
Towards the end of my pup's teething stage, I would freeze washcloths for her to gnaw. But "only" when she was completely supervised.. Making sure, none were lost by ingestion.
My vet said garbola gets stuck between the baby teeth and new teeth and can rot the new teeth. I don't know if it's true or not but it made sense to me.
I went in to pay for gas...
"You don't need to lock the door with that dog in the car", he said, I smiled,...it wasn't the car I was worried about.
My pup retained his two lower baby canines when the adult canines came in. In my pup.. the adult canines were drilling holes in the pups pallet.. the 2 baby canines were not letting the adult teeth go where they needed to go.. so I had the baby ones pulled.. used a ball on a string up in the front of his mouth..and many times a day used gentle pressure to actually slowly move those lower canines out to the proper position.. it worked great.. not all pups have this issue when the baby canines stay in to long.. but I have seen several.. so.. check the roof of your pups mouth.. and make sure there are no holes! good luck.
