This is sort of out of left field, but I used to have a problem with hot spots on my first GSD (a stray ASS). A breeder told me to use dilute (about 5 or 10:1) household bleach on the spots, and, sure enough, they dried up and the dog stopped biting. I would guess it's partly the antibiotic action of the chlorine and partly the dessicative aspect.
Hi Don - in addition to everyones good advice you might want to check her for SARCOPTIC mange (scabies). Alot of vets seem to be stuck on the idea of allergies so much that they miss the easy stuff. Another thing they miss is lice(they itch too - most itching taking place at the base of the tail, thankfullly lice is just a winter problem) Scabies is pretty easy to clear up with oral ivermectin, but it is a much bigger dose than they give for heartworm or general purpose worming. Usually they give 3 doses 2 weeks apart, the mites are killed with the first dose and the other two are to kill the mites that hatch out after etc. There are topical remedies that can be used for scabies but they are hard to apply evenly and I think that the ivomec works better. Hopefully it is just a hot spot but if treating it for that doesn't work you might suggest other things to your vet. There are so many things that can make a dog itch in summer! - bug bites, swimmers itch, fleas, scabies, allergies, yeast infection etc etc etc.... an itchy time of year - probably sends alot of vets kitds to college...

Don- Thanks Lynn I've treated for mage (as you & Todd suggested) with dip, and I dressed it. I guess the rest of the stuff I'll have to start a check off list. My Vet drives a Benze, go figure. No wonder she seems so happy to see us.
Dave-The treatment for hot spot or swimmers icht sounds simple and a easy fix, as I check off I'll be sure to apply it.
Lisa- Anal glands stopped up can cause nawing and scrachting, I'll take her to the groomer 1st and get that done, still cheaper then a vet visit. I mean my vet is very good and throughal. She doesn't leave any stone or corner in your wallet unturned. And she always smiling.
Tami- I hope thats it, I'm leaning more toward swimmers icht or hot spot because its was not spreading like mage does and no sores. Of course if its not I'll have to continue down the check list and then it the dreaded pet/cash vaccumm cleaner "VET".
Thanks again, and my wallet thanks you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I'd like to thank you all that replied to my call for help. The problem is I don't know what really helped, because I tried most if not all of your suggestions.
But results is what counts the hair is starting to grow back in the areas that she had chewed to the skin level.
Again thanks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
