I used K9 ADVANTIX for the first time -2- weeks ago. My older GSD developed a reaction to the skin surface area where it was administered. We just has the skin problem under control.
Has anyone had similar problems or any other conerns using this product.
I use it for the mosquitoes, it did keep them away from him. They hovered around but never saw one bite him.
However the reaction to the dogs skin turned out to be worse then being bitten by the mosquitoes.
Any comments greatly appreciated.
My Akita had to reaction to the product.

Butch,
I tried the Advantix on my GSD and continued the Frontline with my other dog. While I did notice the repelling properties with the Advantix (the mozzies hovered around her body but did land on her muzzle and face) The Springer had the mozzies landing all over him.
The Advantix uses permethrin and Frontline, fipronal. I'm still not sure about the Advantix however. I haven't seen any parasites on either dog. But my GSD has been scratching and I am going crazy trying to find out the cause. Glad you brought this up. I do stretch the treatments to two months and it has been a month and a half now.
Please explain the reactions your dogs' are having. Are they scratching themselves? My girl has scratched her armpits to a bright pink! Take Care.

Frontline is great, but I don’t know if you can get your hands on this stuff its used in agriculture it’s called “Drastic Deadline” made by Bayer, it comes in a pour on, it’s rain resistant and last for three months, very good, very expensive, but it works great for Ticks, Tsetse Fly and red lice, it works for Fly’s as well. But always first check with your vet.

Is Drastic Deadline safe for dogs? It says for cattle, sheep and game.

The only thing I would feel safe using on my own dogs would be Frontline and then I only use it during tick season.
I have an all natural citronella spray for humans that I spray on my hands and rub into the dogs coats if we are out when the mosquitoes are bad.
I would never use any other chemicals on my dogs and I most certainly wouldn't use anything that lasted for 3 months....a name like Drastic Deadline tells you something!!!!!

Thanks for the replys. I've used Frontline for a number of years and haven't had any problems.
The skin reaction was exactly where I placed the Advantix. The lower back around the tail was the worse area. Nugg could reach that area and would bite himself. (This proberly caused as much or more damage) We have the skin cleared up, I won't be using this product again on him. The Advantix cost was nothing compared to the topical spray and medicene it took to clear up his problem.
However, Our Akita did well. No skin reaction whatever.
My female GSD did not have a reaction either.
Cindy, where I live the mosquitoes are a major concern for our dogs. When the sun goes down, they come out in swarms. We have to wear long sleeves at night when it's the rainy season.
My next attempt to control our mosquitoe population will be with a misquitoe trap.
I don't have any info on this product except that it cost close to $500.00. It keeps up to an acre clear of these pesky demons. Going to Sam's Club and give it a try. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I'll give some feedback as soon as I try it.

My GSD also had a skin reaction to advantix right at the spot where I applied it.It seems the stuff really works but causes a reaction in some dogs.I used revolution before because it prevents fleas as well as heart worms at the same time,it's also the only one that has been approved for use on pregnant and nursing bitchs because it's so mild, but I found it to be to mild and by the 3rd week not very effective.

Hi Kim
Yes, we have used it for a year, I have 43 dogs with no incidents, the vet how ever cautioned on over dosing, it’s 1ml per 10 kg, so if the dog is 15 kg dose only 10, if he is over, dose 20 kg. No puppy’s, only dogs eight months and older, that’s why I said check with your vet.

Butch, Was just speaking with a friend whose dog also had a reaction to the Advantix. It only happened the one time. The second and third applications did not affect the dog and now she is happy with it.
I've also continued on with the Advantix, no problems (and the mozzies have been killer here!) My pup's itching was from having some alfalfa accidently added to her food!

Hmmm, I wish I was certain, so I will ask before I comment. Is Advantix the stuff that crystalizes on the coat and kills fleas in the enviornment as well as on the dog?
The vet gave my husband a treatment as our pup was infested coming home from the shelter. Anyways, whatever it was, it gave him a terrible skin irritation for about two weeks. He itched worse then when he had fleas to begin with.
