baking soda...really helps absorb the odor...put lots of baking soda on the dog...a dry dog and really rub it into the dog...let it sit for a while...it's messy but it really does work and then there is a mixture of hydrogen peroxide baking soda and dawn dish detergent...i'm not sure of the exact quantity of each...to wash the dog with...good luck

1-quart hydrogen peroxicide , 1/4 cup baking soda, teaspoon dish soap.
Mix in a 2 liter bottle and use immediately. Pour over the dog and let sit. The dish soap helps to break up the oil in the spray.

The longer you can let it sit the better. 15 mins would be ideal.
It gets rid of almost all the smell, but ne warned, when she gets wet you will still smell a slight skunky odor for a month or more.
Keep an eye on her eyes too... make sure they don't look inflammed. From what I understand the spray burns pretty bad.

What most people (even Veterinarians) don't know is that a VERY heavy dose of skunk spray can kill a dog. They will seem fine, and a few days later can die of toxic shock to the liver. I've seen this happen to terriers that were skunked under ground. My hunting partners were a vet and a pathologist. We always carried IVs for this emergency. The dogs would be put on the IV in order to keep their systems flushed. The problem is usually with a hard dog that wants to stay in the ground to kill the skunk after it's been hit. A dog like that is usually retired because they want to wage war on skunks after that. The ones that come out after being hit will usually refuse to enter the next time it smells skunk.I don't think this is quite the concern with a skunking in the open, above ground.

WoW, you know, you must have been reading my mind, because I have been concerned that she was hit but good that night. It did seem to me that she was rather ill immediately after the hit. She had come to me immediately after I called her and when I downed her she was just lying there shaking her head and drooling, and didn't move or even seem to care what I was doing! Then whenI took her down to the driveway to bathe her, I put her in a down and she didn't even care when I started to wash her( normally not one of her favorite occasions). I toyed w/ the idea of calling the vet, but then I decided that at 3 am it really wasn't an emergency!!After her bath she did seem to feel better. Now she is totally fine.
BUT SHE STILL STINKS!!!
I did try the peroxide/baking soda mix, and at first I thought that she was skunk free, but by today she reeks again! Can it be that it's in her system and coming out of HER pores now, instead of just being on her skin??
I'm off to try and buy a good shampoo. Will need to keep up the bathing for a while I guess. (ALthough I am not happy about having to bath her too frequently, I don't want to irritate her skin)

I have heard that Scope mouthwash works pretty well, too. My mom used that when one of my childhood dogs got sprayed. I was pretty little so I don't clearly remember how she used it and how well it worked, but I have heard from others that it does work if you really soak the dog with it and leave it sit 10-20 minutes before rinsing.
And do watch her eyes for future irritation!
Good luck!

OK, well I think I finally found a solution to the stink!
I went to the place that carries high quality pet products near my house and they had a spray called " Skunk KLeen" by G.G.Bean. Just spray it on and work it into the fur. It is made in Maine and IT WORKED!!!!! YEAH!! Bella is now stink free!!!!
Well, you can bet from now on that at night she won't go out to relieve herself off leash! I've discovered the hard way that one never knows what lurks in the shadows!!!!
Thanks for all of the information!

Been there, done that. Mine got it during a track for a robbery suspect. Skunk just happened across the track at the right time. One dead skunk, one verrrrrry stinky dog. The spray did burn his eye and took a while to heal up, but besides some initial puking, didnt have any other health effects. As for the stink...each time the dog gets wet for about 7 months, the stink will come back to some degree no matter what you use.
