I have a 6 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I think I've trained him to bark while in his crate to let me know he has to go outside and potty. But he won't bark at the door to let me know he has to go out when free in the front of the house. How can I change the crate barking to door barking? If possible. The crate barking is starting to become annoying and I'd love to get him out of this habit. I know I've probably messed up big time. This is the first dog I've ever had, so I'm new to all this. Thanks for any advice.

But also, can you take the dog out more often, pre-bark? If the dog is taken out for enough exercise, and after every meal and play- or training-session, before bed and immediately on arising, the barks to go out will be hugely decreased. I've been trying to take him out prebark like you mentioned and its helping a little. We have a routine down that we follow everyday, but I bumped up the times a bit the past few days. He is still barking though...not sure why, but its not as much.

From day one I introduced my now 18 week old German Shepherd to her crate. She has learned that the crate is a good place, where she sleeps, eats, and just hangs out. I have a strict potty break regimen. The only time she is loose in the house is right after she has done her business outside and I have my eyes on her the entire time. If I cant shes in her crate. When we get to the door to go outside I use my key word with her at the door, the same word that I use a dozen times "while" she is going potty. When I want quiet time or at night I lay a blanket over the crate so she cant see us going back and forth. This eliminates a lot of the unwanted barking. When she does have to go she stands at the door, she does not bark, thats why I have my eyes on her at all times when she is loose
