I currently feed my nine month old Dobie (who weighs 90 lbs)Prairie's Nature Variety. I feed him 4 1/2 cups daily (2 1/4 in am and 2 1/4 in pm) His weight is good. He is moderately active. The amount to feed on the bag of food says 8 cups daily and the 2 veternarians I spoke to - one stated 2 cups a day daily and the other said 6 cups daily. What amount does everyone feed the dogs?
i don't know what everyone else does, but i feed to maintain ideal weight. my 6-month GSD gets 2 c. kibble/with 1/2 C. dry milk (with a little water to mix the milk in) 2X/day. he's growing, but not too fast, his weight is good. about once/wk i add another 1/2 c. kibble to see if he wants it--so far, it seems a bit much. (he slows down in cleaning it up). it's really kind of an art, your dog will show you if he needs more--just watch those ribs and spinal column closely.
i would rather have a dog a bit thin than fat. it's easier to add feed than take off fat. my older 2 dogs are easy: i know exactly how much to feed to maintain their ideal weight. the pup bears watching pretty constantly. just how i do it
Depends, got to watch your dogs , their activity level , their ribs and coat. 90 lb at 9 month
You might keep in mind the calories in the food you are feeding. When I was switching foods around to try and determine my dog’s allergies, I found there was a huge difference in how much I had to feed of any given food. For example, I determined my two dogs eat roughly 2000 calories a day. Nutro Large Breed Lamb and Rice has 318 calories per cup. I had to feed out about 6.25 cups a day with this food. Innova has 557 calories per cup and I now feed out about 3.5 cups a day. If the calories are not listed on the bag, there is usually an 800 number you can call to find this info.
I feed my 10 month old female GSD 3 cups of Azmira dry food spit in 2 feedings with some Azmira canned. She weighs 65#.
When I use my juicer i save/freeze the pulp and mix in a few tbs of that too.

Couldn't have said it better.
If your dog is in good shape and energetic -- if you can easily feel all the ribs (and see the last couple) -- that's what matters. The amount of food it takes for that result is the right amount of food, IMHO.
I'm not a Dobie expert, but I agree, 90 lbs at 9 months seems too big. I thought they were supposed to top out at 90 lbs max or so as adults, not as pups.

According to AKC Standards, a Dobermann bitch's shoulder height is between 24 to 26 inches, and weight is between 65 to 75 pounds, whereas the male stands between 26 to 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 75 to 85 pounds. The FCI standard in Europe is slightly different, and followed by most countries. A male Dobermann should stand 26.5 to 28 inches (68 to 72 cm) and weight between 89 to 100 pounds (40 to 45 kg). A bitch should stand 24.5 inches to 27 inches (63 to 68 cm) and weigh between 71 to 78 pounds (32 to 35 kg).
There is a feed calculator on the nature's variety website. Using the info you gave and a few assumptions you should be feeding about 5 cups but that may be askew if your pup is over weight. Try it out: http://naturesvariety.com/ifc.lasso?r=09...17006WNp2DF7F00
Ah ha...I don't have the Doberman's standards memorized, just going by what I kinda remembered. Interesting though. Still, not all that much disparity in weight. Still seems a bit on the big side for a 9 month old. My Mal didn't get over 60 lbs until he was a little over a year. I think he's like 62 lbs as a 18 month old.
