I am supprised that nobody has seen a Great Dane in this line of work. How about any working situation. Our Vet just rescued one and I am suprised about how much I impressed by this dog. So I was just curious about any in working situations.
iknew aguy that worked with brown male greate dane in sar at an army unit
and as far as iknow he did very nice and even done some operational field tesks with it.
my granfather had amale blue great dane and he work with him on protection and search and bite that was agreat dog with great drives and iwas shake abit each time ihade to stand decoy for him.
iknew another great dane with great drives to that could have been great as working dog but eventully it didnt start the program.
the main problam with that breed that iknow execpt of the rarnes in good bloodlines and indevidual, and ovcourse the size that can interupt some operational missions, is that they get mature prety late and they get old quit fast so with the training program period you get about 4- 5 years of operational work which is not much comparing the effort and time of raising tham and training tham.
ialso know some knpv holand mal bloodlines mixing some great dane in tham which give solid nervs and size.

My parents own a blue great dane, beautiful dog and great temperment, i did some bite work on her when she was younger and she had no probleem with that, prey drive was calm and with a nice full bite, but people are mostly scared of her because of her size! nice dogs
Most great danes I see just aren't cut out for anything, shakey nerves to the point where they're scared of tile floors big blue ladders n pumpkins. Finding a good one is possible but you need to look long and hard. I would be curious about whether the size would be a problem in SAR work since I understand alot of it is agility training so having an agile dog is a big bonus.

I agree with you there Mike, a lot of great danes are just totaal push overs, it all comes down to the breeding and actually finding a breeder that breeds dogs with character and not wet drapes. I remember some hiding behind their owners when strangers came to have a look at the pups, lol very funny thing to see a 80kilo animal hiding behind a person! My parents also had a look at the Irish wolfhound, we saw none with any character at all! I guess big is not always bold One actually rarely sees great danes that actually works and they are usually soft of nature, well the ones i have seen.

IMO, a Great Dane is not suitable for SAR work. People who are serious about SAR work chose breeds of dogs that are *proven* to do the job. High working drive, stable temperament, agility, portability, good health, stamina, and longevity of working life are all things that serious SAR folks consider when choosing a dog. Great Danes typically do not display these characteristics.
There are a lot of people out there who look for "interesting", "unique" or unlikely breeds to so SAR with. IMO, these people are not motivated by the real purpose of volunteer canine SAR, which is to develop and utilize the best tools for the job of finding people.
