Hi, I just had a couple questions on this subject. My Doberman is 11 months old and has been spending alot of time in the sunshine. He is a red doberman and some of his hair on the sides are turning lighter in color-almost blond. I couldn't find any pics of Dobermans having this on the internet. He is not balding, but I just was worried about the light hair. Is the sun doing this to his coat or do you think I have a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I think "alopecia" refers to hair LOSS (?) But my son's blue rescue Dobie has areas of faded silver coat on both sides of his chest which are NOT balding...
I don't know if it's due to the fact that he was living in a sunny outdoor kennel full-time for a year, or if it's a typical dilute gene problem -- Unless this bothers the dog, we're not going to worry about it.

As it happens, another board member had this question late last year, and I saved the stuff. Note the presentation of dull, dry coat on the trunk, and bad regrowth. Note too that blue and fawn Dobes are the most common victims.
