Hi everyone! We have adopted a 2 year old GSD. He is very stressed out, first night away from his family that he has been with since 8 weeks old. Any advice or point me in the right direction for info on how to help relax him into his new surroundings. Thank you Mark.R.
Mark, Keep him safely confined and pretty much leave him alone for a couple days or weeks. Ed's groundwork article will give you everything you need to know.
Yes it is always good to stay aloof for the first couple of days as the pack leader otherwise the dog will sense your weak leadership. Ed's article is very good I use it and it works.
Remember if you mistakingly show affection to help soothe him you are reinforcing the behavior.
Anne correct me if I am wrong. IMO you should take him for a long, long walk to release some of that negative energy. IF he is tired he should be able to relax more in a new enviroment. Dogs naturally migrate to new places via long walks with their pack in wild. I only see this as natural. This alone will not solve the problem but should help. But I could be wrong.

Thanks for your help. I have read and printed the ground work article off for my wife to read as she is the pack leader trust me I know! Thanks again!!!Mark R.
Just to let you know every human in the family needs to be pack leader. Others you will end up with problems down the road. Consistant leadership is the key.

Good point, Daniel, exercise is very important in calming any dog. I personally don't use walking for exercise with a new dog - I don't want to use correction much until I've bonded some with the dog and I don't want to reinforce bad habits (pulling on leash). I find other ways to exercise the dog until it learns to heel properly.
