my 2 year old german shepherd has been getting an irritation on his back and sides. he has been to the vet several times, and the rash goes away then returns. the vet told me he thought this was caused by yeast. after several hundred dollars in medications and vet bills the problem persists. sulfadine seems to help for a few days, but the rash returns. any ideas? any help is appreciated.

Dave, you need to change your displayed name to your real first and last name ASAP in order to continue posting on this board.
Not a clue about the yeast thing...

I'm a BIG believer of Gold Bond powder. The extra strenght green bottle. It'd start off by bathing him about 2 times a week, only in the infected area with Ly-Tar shampoo. You'll most likely have to get this from your Vet. The shampoo is dark brown and smells like tar. Once your dog has dried, puff some of the G.B.powder on the infected area. This will dry the yeast, act as a bacteria killer, stop the smell(if any) and sooth any discomfort. My dog had almost the same problem and this worked for him. Even the meds really didn't do anything, it took a topical treatment.
Hope this helps and hope your dog gets better, Brandi

I had a lot of increasing problems with my dogs when the previous vets prescribed medicine for skin diseases without laboratory investigation. Our current vet first takes skin and fur samples for analysis to detect skin problems. These is the safest way, and the cheapest, in the end. Maybe your vet already did all the laboratory investigation. If not, I'd insist to do it.
Microsporia, for example, is quickly detected by a laboratory test and there is a special vaccine (either preventive or for treatment) that replaces the classical heavy treatments with shampoo and all medicine. Skin irritation is not typical to microsporia, but hair loss is. With no or wrong treatment, you can never get rid of it. It's just an example, I'd first look for a precise diagnosis then for better treatments.

I had similar problems with one of my male GSD's. After many vet visits, diet changes, treatments etc., I read on this board that some dogs are allergic to the nickel in the less expensive fur saver collars. I changed collars and have had no more problems! It took a couple of months for his fur to grow back in normally. Oddly enough, he didn't just lose fur and itch in the area that the collar touched, but it had become systemic and he itched and had thinly haired spots all over. Just in case- if your dog wears one of these collars- you might try changing. Good luck!

Well, after what I just went through w/ my 22 month old,Nero, my first thought was allergies of some kind...
Remember, not all vets are created equal, seek out someone who you feel may be more likely to search for the true cause of the issue before you shell out alot of money on solutions for a wrong problem( meaning, do bloodwork, pathology, etc, 1st....find the culprit, then treat accordingly)
Good luck!

i took his collar off last summer and haven't put it back on yet. he's getting a bath tomorrow, (not easy to do). i am going to try the gold bond after the medicated shampoo. right now the hair is returning. i'm concerned about him staying out most of the winter. when i bring him in during the cold he's o.k. for awhile---then he's outta here. i've never seen a dog so in love with the snow. he puts his nose down and runs as fast as he can sorta like a canine snow plow. after a short time he's covered, ---and happy. wish i could post a picture, but i understand. thank for your help folks. b.t.w., a new vet is in the plan. i check with other pet owners before switching. the current doc came recommended, but i think he could have done more in this case. the lab tests make alot of sense.

well, i went to the new vet today. now we are talking alergy. 144 bucks later i'm out the door with more pills. i received useful info about the gold bond powder. that does seem to be helping. one ggod thing for the pup is he got a professional grooming and bath, and a "doggie massage". he sure was mellow when i picked him up. the groomer told me he just laid on the table and groaned like an old man the entire time he got the massage. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
