I plan on having my male GSD neutered. He is currently 4 months old and only one testicle has dropped. The vet stated she would have "go in and get it" when she does the procedure.
One vet says that we can do it now, another said wait until he's 6 months old. Anyone have any schools of thought on this? <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Will the fact that only one testicle dropped have any long term effects on his health down the road?
Thanks!

IMHO, 6 months is a good time to neuter him -- As your Vet said, they will also do abdominal surgery to excise the undescended testicle during the castration, to prevent it turning cancerous in the future (and no, being a monorchid will not cause health problems down the road, if they remove the hidden gonad as planned).
So David what was your answer? <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Pamela, I agree with 6 months of age, also he would not be a dog you would want to use for breeding but you are going to take care of that anyways.Good luck with the surgery when it happens.
"The male pups are warranteed to have both testicles drop. This part of our warranty expires at 12 months of age. Puppies will not be replaced until 12 months of age. Testicles can drop as late as 18 months."
Thanks Jason! And sorry for not addressing the origional poster's question. It was over two months old, but my post seemed pretty related and simple, and undeserving of an entire thread.

hmmm, rex's balls haven't dropped, most people say they should have dropped by 4 months but i guess if ed's says they can drop as late as 18months i shouldn't give up hope? not that i was going to breed him, i just kind of wanted full development. oh well, he is still a nice dog.....

I believe, but could be mistaken (some one correct me if I am), that the fact that they haven't dropped does not mean they are not developing normally. He will still mature and develop, You will just want to make sure to have them surgically removed after he is done growing to prevent testicular cancer.
thanks for that, i m hoping they still drop, but if not i m wondering what is the latest i can go before i have a vet perform surgery to remove. it would be best if they drop but i m losing a lot of hope despite the wording in ed's warranty that implies that they could drop as late as 18months. is there any harm in waiting for, say, 2 yrs before i have the surgery done (if its necessary)?
The neuter can be done at any age. Even a complex neuter as is the case with an undesceded testicle. I have had a puppy who had both down at 8 weeks, keep playing hide and seek till after 6 months.
