When getting a new GSD pup do you care if the Dog is registered by AKC? I have seen both parents and their heritage but the guy never registered his dogs with AKC because he does not like the organization. What are your thoughts, Pros/Cons.
I never bothered to register my dog for the same reason, but then again, I never intended to breed or show him. I think it depends on your plans for the dog.
For me as a breeder I like to see people register their pups because it's a way for me to keep up with my litters. Even if they are just pets it shows ownership in case of stolen dogs or messy divorce situations, not that it's the end all be all but there is record of the dog...
I collect the $15 fee and $12 for the recovery program and the new owners sign the papers on pick up of their puppy. I submit the paperwork. I started doing this year ago because I knew of people that would sell on limited registration and the buyers would try to white it out and do full registration on the dog. So I started sending in the paperwork instead and have just continued doing it. I send them in all at once <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
IF you're registering AKC, they are trying a new program for the breeder to register the full litter.
"Breeders now have the option to register an AKC® litter and individually register each puppy in the litter all at the same time using one easy application form. The full litter registration application offers breeders discounted litter and dog registration fees. "
In the case of our last GSD, the breeder filled out her registration with our chosen name and her kennel name when we picked up our pup. If you are required to use their kennel name after your dogs' name, they would probably have stipulated that fact when you purchased, or named the dog themselves.
If the breeder has not registered the litter with the AKC you'll only be able to get an ILP listing for your dog. A dig with an ILP can participate in all AKC events except confirmation. You can go to the AKC website for details but I know the dog is required to be neutered.
Re the Dobe. Generally if the dog is show and/or breeding quality, the breeder would want/require you to use her kennel name as part of the registered name. For example one of my collies' registered name was Sun Country Beau's Cabaret. If your Dobe is pet, your breeder may not care if you include the kennel name or may prefer you do not. Best thing to do is ask.
