I got the following email today. I am posting it and the reply. I had no idea there were suck crazy people out there.
I'm with German Shepherd Rescue of No Calif. Sunday I had a call from a woman wanting me to take 2, 7 month old pups off her hands. I believe these pups were stolen. I went to Santa Rosa to evaluate the pups and was very impressed with the quality of these dogs. The more I pressed her for information on the breeder the more vague she became. She did say the Grandfather was the 1998 and 1999 USA SchH Champion and the dam is a German import. I couldn't get any other information out of her, not even where the breeder lives, no vaccination records, nothing. They are very nice West German type pups. They aren't tattooed in the ear but I did not have an opportunity to roll them over and see if they are tattooed on the inside of the leg. I didn't have my scanner with me but I am going back over to scan them and see if they are microchipped.
The only location information I could get out of her was a slip she made saying the pups had a 5 hour ride in a car to get to her house. That could be anywhere from Southern Oregon to Southern California or Western Nevada.
If you hear of anyone missing two nice pups please have them contact me.
Thanks

I wrote and asked her to contact the police - her answer is below
In rescue we get do gooders who think dogs are not being treated properly wanting us to steal the dogs for reasons no more valid that not having a dog bed that's soft enough. When I mentioned these dogs need a working home she was afraid if they went to work as police dogs a bad guy might hit them. The more I tried to get information on the owner or their medical records the more evasive she became. I asked her to give the breeder my phone number and she said "No no no I can't do that". I offered to pay for the pups to get their papers and she still wouldn't give the breeder my contact info. Her story was that she is trying to help the breeder who couldn't sell these pups. If he couldn't sell them and I want to buy them it would seem appropriate for her to give him my number.
I think she, and probably a second person, think they are doing the right thing for the pups by getting them away from their breeder. As I said this is not the first time I've had this happen. I pulled a dog a few months ago who had a chip that had migrated and the shelter didn't find it. He had been stolen from a breeder in San Diego. That's a 9 hour drive.
And I have tried to get the police involved but without more information, a stolen animal report, a chip proving ownership or tattoo they can't do much. I work for the County and have already asked friends at the Sheriffs Dept to check.
Could not believe some one would do that. I bet the breeder/owners are going crazy right now looking for them. I hope they find them. Thanks for the post
I've heard of a couple very expensive Rottweilers being stolen while at dog shows, usually from unlocked trailers or vans. Not by do-gooders, but by just plain old dog thieves. They may not have the papers but they can still use these intact dogs and fake the pedigree w/a ringer of similar age/gender.
Talk about low down. I hope the rescue woman gets these pups and finds their owners, as this sounds way too suspicious.
I was at a show back at the begiining of the year where the breeder went and took the dogs from the owner(w/o notice) and left. I did not stick around for details but by the time we left the police was there. SAD really shows and trails are to be fun not heart-ache

How would a breeder take dogs from a owner? Do you mean the breeder placed dogs with an owner, then something in the contract was violated and the breeder repossessed the dogs? That's the only legit reason I can fathom for a breeder repo'ing dogs.
I don't know if the contract was broken or anything. Al I know is what the owner said "she was showing her other dogs and when she came out her other dogs were gone!!! She said that the breeder and her had some words and they were no longer there and someone witness them in her truck. Sad really Cause I had never locked my truck or kennels Just put a guard dog on duty sign up but now I lock everything just in case. Never know when some one will get stupid.
