Hi, I'm new here..still trying to look at all the great info on this website!!! I do have a question, when should a male GSD be ready to start breeding?? I have had many request from people in my area to have their females bred to mine. ANY help would be great!! As my personal webpage I have my GSD's pedigree listed. Nice being here.
Jennifer,
Unless your dog can fully pass a breed survey and then have his HIPS and ELBOWS X-Rayed and OFAed or what ever else they do for dogs of breeding quality your responses here are going to be to not breed your dog. This site is full of folks with very high quality dogs who would not consider breeding them. The reason to breed is to improve the over all quality of the breed and the people on this site are looking to improve the breed. I know you may not like that answer but that is the best one I can give you.
Is your dog titled and will he improve the over all breed of the GSD? Tittles really do not make that much of a difference to most folks, what will make a difference is that will your dog bring something to the breeding table.
Once I had a GSD that everyone wanted to breed to my dog, he was a beautiful dog.... Down side he also had bad hips.
Please only breed this dog if you can bring something to the GSD family. Other wise do not breed him just for the sake of breeding. I am not trying to be mean, just asking for the sake of the breed that he not be breed unless he bring something to the table and I do not mean just looks.

Welcome! And you got a great answer from Jay, IMO. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Thanks, I believe that my dog would improve the breed. I agree on everything you said. So when should I have him x-rayed?? Does he have to be "done" growing?? Check out his pedigree and let me know your opinion. I don't have any pics on it yet..sorry
Jennifer, people who want to breed "my dog w/your dog" are a dime a dozen. Recently someone posted a similar question and Connie Sutherland, I think it was you Connie, gave a great answer by inserting a website that listed the basics (the downside) of what someone should know before even considering the idea. This is going to sound rough but I don't know how else to say it...if you don't even know the correct age of a breeding male, how could you know that your dog could bring something to the table to improve the breed <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> ??

No, it does not sound rough. It sounds like what a person who really wants a true and direct answer wants to hear.
Jennifer, this board will tell you the truth. Anyone who has read it and joins up knows that, and wants the truth.
So welcome! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
P.S. What is your dog doing? What kind of training?
Yikes! That wasn't the website I was referring to but that's a great link to add to this thread. In fact, it may even be better than the one I mentioned.
