Sorry, the subject sort of looks like I am setting up a fight which I obviously am not... That aside, somewhere well down the road I am planning on getting a new dog to do shutzhund work for sport. I currently have an altered Male Dobe who is great and who I am trying to learn the tricks of the trade with. I know as a current Dobe owner, I love the breed for their high energy, short hair, willingness to learn and amazing ability to velcro themselves to your leg no matter what the circumstance. That list of positives is very long in my mind and in getting a new working dog, what are the +'s and -'s with the doberman vs the GSD? When one thinks of a working dog, GSD or Mal comes to mind, and they seem to have the market cornered in sport work. I am sure there is a reason for this, or is it just personal preference? I do see working Dobie and GSD websites. Anyone have any experience positive or negative, or just overall impression about this?

The other thing is that I know experienced guys like Ed and Bernard have GSD's, so the pull there is strong. I guess I want to know why *not* a doberman, given their working heritage.
Thanks all!

The key is finding a good dobie. They do exist, I know people with some very nice working dobies, it's just not as easy as finding a nice shepherd.

Dobes are a different breed altogether. I'd love to have one, I've always loved them as a kid and while I love my shepherd right now I get the feel that he's kind of 'flat' personality wise--a great worker, a stable dog, quite intelligent but very different from the dobes I've met (who, although pet lines, were VERY intelligent and almost snarky). From what I've heard the good ones are just as good as any; as Mike said though, the hard part is finding one. For me the price is also a big factor...I think they go for 1800 dollars and up, whereas I can easily get a working GSD for 1000 and under and a Mal or Dutchie for much less, so your losses are bigger if you're trying to find a very good worker as you wash them out. Price isn't that big of a factor if the dog can be *certified* to work right out of the box, but this is a puppy we're all talking about here.

My two cents--The only down side I can see with a gsd vs dobe is the shedding.I vacuum constantly.I think dobes are an excellent breed but I remain a gsd owner always.Wheather working or companion I have yet to find a more versitile breed JMO .I may be way out there, but I remember reading an article about the military trying to develope the ultimate breed however nothing even came close to a GSD.Anyone else remember hearing about that?

I've at least heard a bit of this question by training with Dave Blank, who doesn't care a hoot what breed a dog is. They either have a decent combination of the right drives (and if they do, he seems to be able to find them!) and the right nerve. The question really becomes one of finding a dog (or pup) who has the goods - regardless of breed. That can be a challenge regardless of breed.
I'm new to the sport, but really enjoyed watching a Dobie earn an FH tracking title a bit over a year ago.
We've got a 16 year old handler about to pick up a new Dobie pup in the next couple of weeks who plans to start training with us.
I'm just rambling - none of this suggests that "Breed X is better then Breed Y for Schutzhund.." It does suggest that the work is what matters - not the breed.
Best wishes to you!!

The biggest problem with dobies is that they're not GSD's. GSD's are the best all around dogs, they can do anything you ask of them, All other breeds are 2nd best, JMO, of course others will have a different opinion ,

Hi all, i am just back from work. Thanks all for the input. I have to say I am on the other side of the fence as you Connie. No GSD will ever be a dobie which is why I am trying to get some sound evidence to convince me that I need a GSD. Dont get me wrong, I know GSD's have it all (including way too much hair but my buddy "Rocco" is pretty slick too, not to mention the most handsome and personable dog I have ever seen. The debate rages on!!

Why Al....and the biggest problem with GSDs and Dobies is that they arent' Mals!!! Of couse, I have heard that Mals and Dobes are similar.
