ok, i've been reading threads for like 8 hrs and i'm about brain-dead. sorry if this covered somewhere and i missed it.
our pup got parvo/distemper (modified live virus) vac at 7.5 weeks. we got her at almost 10 wks old. she has an appt tomorrow at the vet. she hasn't had any other vacs besides worming. all vacs given by breeder.
do i give her another parvo? she is on a raw diet. i feel like i just need some peace of mind right now. i'm so new at this! thanks,
Brian - nomatter what your Vet tells you - I would not do a second parvo shot at 10 weeks. I have had parvo several times in our kennel and every time we got it we felt it was a result of the pups getting it from the vaccination.
With that said - a 10 week old pup does not need a second parvo shot.
You will learn something about your vet by seeing what he or she recommends - if they push the vaccinaqtion - shame on them because they are more interested in your moeny than the health of your pup.
OK I have a question then. I gave shots at 5, 7, 9 weeks to three of my puppies and on the 14 week all three were in the vet with parvo. 3, 567. 00 later I am now confused. any infromation would be nice
why would puppies be vaccinated SO young and why THREE times in a one month period? I would think that the number of vaccines you gave completely neutralized any natural immunity passed by mom and when they contacted parvo in the environment were left with a compromised immune system and no protection to Parvo.
This is an educated guess, we can't ever really know what is happening. I do know that health doesn't come in the form of an injection, more is not better!
if the pups make it thru this, they have lifetime immunity to parvo. I would NEVER EVER vaccinate these dogs again for anything except rabies as required by law in your state.
If you plan on being a breeder, you owe it to the dogs you produce to educate yourself on these very important issues so you can do the best for the pups, and for the breed. I believe that generations of overvaccinating are weakening the dogs we share our lives with. Look at all the autoimmune disorders that we all accept as NORMAL in dogs! These are IMO man made problems, so many over vaccinate and feed food NOT appropriate for dogs.

Hello Cindy, I have had vets tell me 8 years ago that dogs need three shots and two boosters. So that is what I have followed NOW 8 years later I am on this forum and find out that I have been doing it wrong. So I am open for learning I will go and read ED's knowledge
Barbara - dont feel alone here. I used to vaccinate the snot out of my dogs and feed Science diet because I felt I wanted to do the best for the dogs I raised and produced.
Well I was 100% wrong. That doesnt make use bad people unless we continue to do it after we have been told that there are better ways - AND THERE ARE BETTER WAYS.
The people I dont have any respect for are the Vets who push science diet and all these vaccinations. They are too lazy to educate themselves on a natural diet. If they had a brain they would sponsor clinics for people to come in and teach classes or seminars on the all-natural diet.
Thanks Ed, I feel awful due to my pups had to go though all that. I had many people tell me just to put them down but I had to try to save them . And we did!! but I want to learn a better, healthier way for them. I come here and read and I am learning so much. Thank You and your staff for this site. It is really helpful to a lot of people I wish I would came here earlier. Better later then never. Again Thank you. Barbara
i probably wasn't to clear when i wrote the intial post. my pup is now 14.5 weeks and the vet really pushed a second parvo/distemper this morning.
i went ahead and did it because i didn't see the replies before i went and i wasn't sure what to do. so total she has had 2 parvo/distemper at 7.5 weeks and 14.5 weeks. i will give no more besides rabies which is required by law at 16 weeks.

There is no longer any area of this country that does not have a heartworm season. Even those scary maps in the vet's office are out of date. Don't fool around with heartworm.
There used to be a few areas that didn't have it, such as the desert of SoCal, and Salt Lake City. Both now have it.
Salt Lake, for example, had a city beautification project, with new trees throughout the city. The following year, these trees were pruned. Now there were thousands of knot-holes in trees throughout Salt Lake city. This was perfect for the tree hole mosquito, and the heartworm cases started, two+ years before the vets understood what had happened. Salt Lake City is now considered as endemic for heartworm as Louisiana or Florida.
Just to point out that even if you've read stats from a couple of years back saying that your area has no heartworm, don't believe it. There isn't one state left with no heartworm season. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
