We are taking care of a German Shepherd for a friend in boot camp. Much to our surprise, she started bleeding 15 days ago. We have been told she would bleed for 7-10 days, but it is now day 15- is this normal and if so, does anyone have any encouraging words that this will end soon? I did a search for "dog in heat" on the discussion forum, but didn't find an answer, should I have used different search words?
Thank you for any help-CM
Hello Carol
My duchie just finished her first heat i was told the same thing 7 to 10 days of bleeding she actually bled for 15 days. it's different for every dog. if this is not her first heat ask her owner how long she bled last time. also my dog Cali did not eat as much during her cycle.
Most estrus cycles in dogs lasts for about 3 weeks. Just because you are not seeing bright red blood doesn't mean she is out of heat. This usually happens when they are ready to breed(this stage usually lasts about 1 week)and the discharge is lighter and has a more mucous like consistency. After this, the discharge becomes a darker red for about a week.
Do a search for "estrus cycles in dogs" for a more specific explanation of each stage.
Thank you to both people who responded. I cannot reach the owner because he is in early stages of boot camp. He has just had this young dog for a few months and may not have even know she wasn't spayed. I will look up the subject line one of you suggested. Thank you again.
