I'm pretty sure Ed said he used straw in his dvd but you might want to pm him and double check.
Straw is cheap and easy to change out when it get a little muddy, etc. I have friends that have the floor of the doggy house on a piece of pink insulation about 2" thick and with a little straw on the floor. Even in the dead of winter it is very comfortable in the dog house (I'd say high 40's or so).
I should add, that if you feed raw chicken quarters or meat that doesnt stay in the bowl, another drawback to sawdust is that it will stick to the meat.
You can also stack straw of hay bales around the outside of the dog house to provide extra insulation if it gets really cold where you live. This is what I did for my outside dog (GSD/Malamute) when I lived in Wyoming. At that time it would get down as low as -30 F, not counting wind chill and the dog stayed nice and warm.
Here in Vermont we raise the doghouse off the ground (like with a wooden pallet), put straw under the pallet and in the dog house. Straw is safe, a great insulator and easy to clean. They also sell door-flaps for dog houses that make good wind-blocks. The dog can get in and out but it stays a little warmer inside. I'm not sure how cold it gets where you live, you may be fine just filling your house with straw. It gets VERY cold here and we get a lot of wind.
