My son's one year old GSD has had problems with recurrent diarahea and weight loss. Pancreas function normal, no parasites. He was raised on raw diet and my son also has tried good dry food, makes no difference. Now, vet says that he has an overgrowth of clostridium bacteria in his gut causing irritable bowel syndrome. Treating it with flagyl, higher fiber diet, anti-diaraheal.
Does anyone have any information or experience with this? Thanks for your help.
Sorry to hear about your troubles with your GSD. I had a female who was having diahreah all the time also. It got better on the raw diet, but in the mean time I used Imodium AD (Generic). There really is no overdose level with in reason. My gastrodoctor (people) told me I could take it on a daily basis if needed. So don't worry about giving it to the dog everyday if needed. Don't bother with Pepto bismol. I've found that you end up with a Pink dog that still has the squirts. LOL Good luck
P.S. Ed recomends feeding canned pumpkin to regulate bowls.
I had a mal pup with this same issue. Also had a friend with young GSD that the vet's couldn't seem to help.
I did some research and we both put our dogs on small daily doses of Tylan (non prescription poultry antibiotic) ....it's very bitter and you have to put it in a capsule or the dogs won't take it, even in some tasty food. It did the trick and both dogs can be on normal food and are not on any other meds.
You may want to search the net on the topics of Tylan and Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) ...I don't have the dosage or treatment protocol handy but will keep looking for it!
