GSD almost nine wks old and appears to be very undersized both weight and physical stature. Will take to the vet for sure but need some feedback. Contacted breeder and was informed that all of litter except single male were very small. Less than ten pounds and not much longer than 16 inches. Just does not feel right. Has history of very finicky eater and are switching to all natural diet. Have only had pup one wk, please help if can, she is a darling crate trained already, alert and very inquisitive. Problem is need to know if something is wrong, we all know that thing called attachment.
Thanks much for the reply. We are having difficulty with her diet according to the breeder she has always been an extrememly finicky eater. Switched to all natural diet yesterday and she ate very well, today is a different story. Eating but not much. I understand this may take time and adjustment but she spits out every chicken soup kibble mixed with natural meal. Not dumb. I am very leary of putting parents names on board at this time. It is just not fair to breeder or mom and dad until if and when find out there is something wrong. Dads weight is 110lbs and mom 75lbs.
Pup stands between 9 and 10 inches at front shoulders and is about 14-16 inches long.
GSD 91/2 wks old now and weighed today. Startling total of 6.5 lbs. This is not a misprint, something is wrong. Has filled out well from when we got her two weeks ago. She could not have been more than 4 lbs. Eating well on all natural diet. Thanks all for replies, please anymore advice, or knowledge reply. It has been suggested maybe she is just the runt of the litter. I don't buy it. My opinion is that she should be at least 15 to 17 lbs at going on ten wks.
I know this must be a terrible worry for you. Did you take her to the vet? I would have her checked for coccidia and hook worms. Just a thought. Even though most breeders do wormings before they ship the puppies, stress can sometimes bring on the coccidia.
Hope she will be well soon and gain some weight.
Greta, I had a similar problem with my pup back in december. He had been wormed when we got him at 8 wks. He didnt have an appetite and wasnt gaining weight. He had coccidia which complicated things. We medicated him and saw almost literally no improvement. We were worried at the time that he would be permanently damaged from the problems. It was nerve wrecking to do everything we could without results but sure enough he came around! Now you would have never guessed that we had the problems we did as a puppy. Specifically about the lack of appetite- When we told the vet that he wouldnt eat the vet put some canned cat food out... and he chowed down. We then put him on a Science diet mix of canned and kibble. He scarfed it down like you wouldnt believe. He is now back on the raw and doing great. Our problem with the coccidia was complicated because at the time he would eat his feces if he had the chance. We were on nonstop poop patrol but even then mangaed to miss a pile or two. I believe we medicated him too long. When we ended up taking him off the medication is when we saw a turn around and within a day or so he was aok. Not sure if your situation is the similar or not but hopefully something i said could be helpful. Im no expert but this was my experiance. Best of luck with her
Vet checked Greta today and did find coccidia and hook worms, so she got started on medication. Her heart rate is very rapid and she has a heart murmur. The vet suggests we have an ultra-sound done. She eats her raw diet well and is very playful, but her bone structure is still so small and fragile. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding an ultra-sound? THANK YOU everyone for you replies. Greta looks like a happy VERY young puppy, not 9 weeks old and 6.5 lbs. If anyone would like to see a photo of her, please e-mail us at: westyswoods@centurytel.net
Thank you, again.
