Hey all, I just had a question after watching the movie.
Is it ok to (when outing) offer up a treat in exchange for the ball? or should I just wait till he lets the ball go? I remember that I shouldn't out very often at all or else it will get mouthy but Im not sure if I should just wait it out or not.
Thanks for your opinions!

Here's a quote, but it's good to read the whole thing; there's much more.
QUOTE: In the case of the OUT - it is important that this is trained correctly. When a pup has his prey item the OUT is started by getting the pup to drop the item by offering food or a second prey item. Always use the OUT command when teasing the dog to drop the prey and praise with GOOD OUT when he drops the item.
When the pup can not be tricked into dropping the prey for food or another toy it is then ready for the OUT. END QUOTE
On a slightly related note, although it is good to trade food for a toy when doing obedience type work... I would never use food during actual protection work later on when the dog is working on a decoy Yes, I've actually seen people give their dogs a treat for doing good in bitework

Yep,I can't imagine giving a treat to my male after his bite work ,he'd take my fingers with it(from being so loaded) I have used other jute tugs to out him in the past when he would have a tug(his reward for obedience) in his mouth and I wanted him to out it.I am still at times having issues with him on the out and I have resolved that matter with an E-collar cause at this point from a distance that is the only thing that will work.My 10 month old male won't out either he is actually worse and again I think I'm going to have to use the e-collar cause NOTHING ELSE is working.
I regret not teaching him the out at an earlier age.
