My 9 month old male neutered GSD licks and chews the bottom on his left front pad. He licks so much it becomes red and irritated. I have used Bitter Apple and Chew Guard to prevent the behavior but they do not work. He had a small sore on the bottom near the webbing which has healed. The vet has checked the pad and there is nothing in it. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Two of my dogs get this consistently this time of year. One's allergic to some of the grasses, the other licks bits of stone or grit out that get stuck in the skin of the pad and doesn't seem to know when to stop licking. Either way antimicrobial wound cream seems to heal it up very quickly.
Klaus has not been tested for allergies. The vet asked me if Klaus had been digging under pine trees. He had, he is a avid digger. He no longer has access to the trees. The small spot that was near the webbing was the size of a dime, the vet thought that he could have stuck himself with a pine needle and chewed to remove it, but the pine needles leave behind a substance that causes inflamation. I used an antibiotic cream, animax which has not healed the spot. An xray of the paw sounds like a good idea, also allergy testing. Klaus is a strong, large, highly intelligent, energetic boy who otherwise is very healthy.
have the vet swab and culture it to check for yeast - that's how yeast infections manifest themselves sometimes. And if it's not put in check, it'll just get worse.
and then it's REALLY hard to get rid of (trust me).
According to the acupoints, could be the small intestine that is bothering him.
Do his feet smell all right? How are his ears? Are they dirty a lot? Do they smell all right? What about his breathe? Just thought, if he has trouble with the food (i.e maybe not the proper protein etc.) he may also have trouble with his ears, breathe, and so forth and not just his foot.
I had the left foot xrayed and the results were negative. The vet took a swab of Klaus' ears (his ears can get very red and do bother him once in a while) and a small scrap off the paw for examination. There was no yeast or fungus growth. What I have been putting on his paw to stop the licking is Listerine. This seems to help. It certainly does smell bad. I don't know what else to do.
His breathe does not smell, and there is no odor from the ears. He is fed Canidae dry twice a day with 1 tbs cottage cheese at each feeding and a 3V Capsule skin formula added . He likes raw broccoli and carrots for treats.
Sometimes the irritation comes specifically from licking. He had an irritation there and now he's in the habit of licking(which can cause unbelievable damage to broken skin). Whatever you can do to stop the licking will help break the cycle. One thing to try is Allerspray with Bittran II. Dogs usually hate the taste of it and you can get it from most any Vet. It works on alleries, hot spots, wounds, and bites. Good luck!
