Do puppies fed a raw diet grow slower than puppies fed kibble?
I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that turned 1 years old yesterday, I feed him a raw diet. But then I have a friend who's Cavalier turned 1 years old about a month ago and hers is twice the size as mine, she feeds Iams puppy food.
I feed my dog chicken wings and turkey everyday, along with some Salmon oil OMEGA 3 and Vitamin E. No veggies, because i've tried and he wont touch the stuff. Every once in awhile he gets a little organ meat.
I'm just concerned with the size of my dog compaired to my friends. These dogs are suppose to be small anyways. Hers doesn't seem fat or anything, just twice as tall and long. Does kibble have something in it that makes dogs grow faster?
Yeah they do. My GSD didn't really 'catch up' until after his first year. On the plus side he's never had any pano or anything.
Boy, I sure hope my GSD doesn't do any "catching up". He's just shy of one year and closing in on 26 inches and 80 lbs. Raw diet except for a bit of kibble (until the bag was used up - dumb me) mixed in when I first got him at 3 months. I'm holding my breath he doesn't go over standard. There can be a lot of variation within a breed as to when dogs mature. Your pup's growth rate may have more to do with genetics than diet. JMHO, I think having your dog on a raw diet has given him the best chance of neither growing too fast nor too slow, but rather in line with what his genetics dictate. So relax, and pat yourself on the back for giving him the best start in life.
Incidentally, my GSD has had Pano on his raw diet, so again, while I believe a raw diet is optimal, I don't think it eliminates all problems, but it probably does minimize them, whatever the size / breed.
I have a King Charles too, well it's my sons but I feed him of course,(i knew that was going to happen) anyway mine is tall too and I thought for sure he was going to be small(hoping) but when we took him to the vet another King was there and he was smaller than mine and I have been feeding him Raw from the time we got him at 10 weeks. He is now 5 months old.I think they all vary in size a bit, a bit like a lot of other breeds none are the same anymore.(size wise)
Thank you to everyone who answered. I feel much better now. I'm guessing he will catch up in time. The smaller the better IMO, I don't want a big dog. lol
