Well tonight it almost happened. We almost los our 13 year old beagle to choking of all things.
I was having a snack, and decided that the cheese I was going to use was too dried out, so I threw it away. About an hour later our GSD Dixie pulled it out of the garbage, and bit off about a quarter of it. Dogs being dogs, the beagle grabbed the part that dropped and tried to woof it down, so Dixie wouldnt get it.
He started choking, and not knowing the severity made him go outside to prevent him puking on the floor.
Well we watched him trying to get it out and struggling, so she put on a coat and I grabbed a light. He died just as we got to him. I started frantically digging cheese out of his throat, and had her start compressions. When I was sure he had a clear airway, I blew into his nose a couple times, and he started breathing very slow and shallow. I carried him into the house, and again delivered rescue breaths, and had my wife bring out my CPAP and allowed the oxygen to blow buy his face. He came back and was wagging his tail and on his feet in about 10min time.
Thank God. We are not ready to let him go yet.
Maybe its a Christmas miracle.
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always have what you've always had.
I am so glad you were there and that there was a good outcome. But please change your garbage can to one with a securely latched lid. And, as a secondary step, teach them that trash cans will "bite" if they get into them. You can do this by putting something tempting in the trash cans along with a couple mouse traps or a product called snappy traps. Dog tries to get goody and gets "bit" or at least very startled when he sets off the trap. Just don't use the larger rat traps.
I've had a dog choke a couple of times when I was starting out on raw food because I used to cut it...what I did was hold her under the belly and lift her up, I don't know what happens but gravity or something makes her start to gag and eventually spit the food out. Doggy heimlech.
