Titles in today's world have become such a issue. (I am going to upset some people but here goes).
Many people buy titled dogs just to bred
Many people pay off judges
Many people go to small shows to ensure titles
Many dogs are given titles that they do not deserve
and on and on
How do you really know if the dog is "All" that.
Many people are now saying ScHH is not what it was back in the day and is a sport now not truelly testing the dogs.
the scores, the venue (regional, national, etc), all make a difference. but if you really want to evaluate a dog that you're considering buying or looking at puppies from, the one and only way to be sure is to work or see the dog work in person. or with the help and advice of someone who has worked the dog or can help you tell what you're seeing.
a lot of people think their dogs are "all that" - until they step on field and compete against one that is (although some people who talk the most will always find an excuse to NOT step on the field). same goes with trainers or decoys - they think they know what a strong dog is, until a truly strong dog hits the sleeve for the first time. perceptions change in a hurry. i've seen it first hand.
but back to the main point - you're right. titles by themselves have become a bit watered down as to their worth on paper. but except for the most extreme (and corrupt) cases, a title on a dog still means SOMETHING. how much depends on all that other stuff.
IMPO I think SchH at one time was a great tool for testing working dogs but has been taken over with $$$$ and turned in to a route sport. I see more and more new clubs poping up that are more focused on real life and not route. I Personally love training my dogs and the more I can learn and train the bettrer but I want to know when I am or my family is in harms way that my dog will stand and fight not look for a sleeve to bite.
For me it is show me what the dog can do! I have seen many great dogs never titled due to what ever reasons but harder then some titles dogs I have seen.
