Hi all. We took Kasey our 12 week old GSD Male to the vet today. And guess what, he has Hook Worms! He was given meds. Which seem to be working, because the worms are coming out. Are there any long term affects of these worms on him. Can this hurt his growth? How long should I keep him away from our other GSD so she doesn't get them? Any advice is greatly needed. Thank you for your help.
Hook worms are a normal parisite for canines. The medication should take care of your immediate problem. However somtimes you might need more than one go around of the treatment. I had a pup who had to have three treatments over a three month time span. He was heavily infested and the medication only took care of the adults and not the eggs. Because the hook worms can live in the lower intestine/colon the medication may not be able to have the toxicity needed in one treatment. Check with your vet on follow up of the treatment. You may have to drop off a stool sample a couple of weeks later just to have it checked again.
When I worked for Dr. Keeney, DVM. What we used for hook worms is Panacur. We would have the owners give it for three days in a row, then the following month again three days in a row. We would have them skip a month and then again dose them for three days.
And since you have a multi dog household, I would also give it to the other dogs. The reason being, if one dog has them most likely all your dogs have them. You just need to know the weights of all your dogs so you can use the proper dosage.
And the advice given is very good about keeping all the dog droppings picked up.
I also have a multidog household, and all my dogs are on Heartgard Plus. However Heardgard will not kill whip worms. So as a precaution I take a stool specimen from my dogs into the vet every three months.
