My puppy since I have had him moves and jerks in his sleep. He seems fine so I really don't bother him. Although, sometimes he whimpers, or acts like he is running.
Now the first few times I had seen this I woke him up. But he would go back to sleep and do it again. This doesn't happen the whole time he is sleeping, just here and there.
My other dog I had never did this.
Anyone elses does this? Anyone have an idea on why they do this?
gee, i thought all dogs did this. never heard of a dog that didn't. no need to wake him up. sometimes my dog even cries in his sleep. then my husband and i kind of sing along with him, which makes the dog wag his tail in his sleep, too. pretty funny.
Alica that's so sweet..(the singing)
My female GSd still does it, I think half of the time she dreams she is chasing our cats. And our king Charles (5 monthsold)he dreams he is being chased by our female.

My dog does it too, nothing to worry about and no need to wake him up.
Tucker growls in his sleep, now thats creepy...waking up in the middle of the night to hear your dog growling and trying, in the dark, to figure out what exactly he's growling at.
I have a vague memory of seeing a documentary one time that did a study of what dogs and cats dream about. They were given some kind of drug that prevents the movement restriction of sleeping (so basically they would sleepwalk) and the researchers could guess what they were dreaming about.
Cats mainly seemed to dream about playing, stalking and catching prey, and fighting. Dogs' dreams centered around their owners, anticipating a treat (drooling), fending off enemies, running, and fighting.
John, your puppy is probably dreaming about playing with his littermates
Most of my previous dogs have had some movement at times when sleeping, usually the "running" of the legs in a jerklike action, some more than others.
When my previous GSD did it, I figured she was chasing a ball, which she loved more than anything, except me
It's not something to worry about, IMO. If it's constant and unending, what I would do is start to pet the pup/dog very gently and whisper good girl/boy...hoping of course I wasn't praising the dog for something they're doing in their sleep that they weren't supposed to be doing if they were awake. LOL That seems to calm them down.
here is somthing intresting: my dogs move alot in their sleep to
once me and my male mal where at avery long and extencive work of opening reach roads we where both half dead.
once after open one of that 5km road we crash in the operation room
and my dog fall asleep while iwas talking to the secreterys isaw my dog move in hes sleep and istart talking to him quietlly like he was on search he actully move acroding to what isaid and moved hes legs and even his nose like he smell and search and when igave directions he legs moved much faster...he he ... in the end italked like igave him the price and he wag his tail he he he funy...
Sefi, that is so wonderful and cool! Thank you for my laugh of the day! You confirmed my feeling that dogs can hear what we whisper to them while they're sleeping. Your dog must have been very intent on his work while sleeping, to not have woken up through the whole conversation. Too funny
I'm glad you are here on this forum. I like reading your posts and hearing about how and what you're doing there in Israel and how you train your dog. Take care and stay safe.
