Which one do you prefer and is one required for schutzund or other field training? My 13 week old doesn't have her ear tatoo'ed yet and I'm leaning more towards the under the skin ID...any thoughts?

Not sure about one or the other being required or not. All my dogs are micro-chipped and all but the Bloodhound are tattooed also (they were done when I got them). The scanning laws are "iffy" in my state so I like that they have the tattoos for visible identification purposes. Both vets that I use also know about them so if one of my dogs is brought in by someone other than me or my husband, they know to call me.

I'd do both. I have ACDs and we don't generally tatoo them in the ear but I tatoo the thigh of my guys and have them microchipped. One thing to consider that if your sole consideration is Schutzhund, I'd do the tatoo. I believe (but could be wrong so don't bet the farm on this) that you need to supply the scanner if the club you are competing at does not have one. Don't know how prevelant it is for clubs to have scanners these days. I have my own scanner so it is not an issue for the club I work with or if I travel.

My malamute is microchipped. Be warned the microchips can travel to the leg of the dog if active. On some of the mushing dogs here in Alaska the chip is sometimes at the high part of the leg. There is no damage caused by the chip and no need to be worried. They can also be surgically removed if you don't want them anymore. HomeAgain is an excellent service.I recommend the chip if you can find a vet which does chipping often, mostly because people who try inserting them sometimes don't do the procedure right.
There are 2 major chip programs, I recommend HomeAgain.

I believe for U.S.A. (United Schutzhund Clubs of America), all GSDs must be tatooed as of Jan 1, 2006. Other breeds competing in U.S.A. events can have tatoo or microchip. For complete rules, go to http://www.germanshepherddog.com/members/index.htm and scroll down a bit to " Please find the tattoo ruling that went into effect January 1, 2006"

"Motion by Mark Przybylski that tattoos or microchips will be required for German Shepherd Dogs entered in all USA performance events effective January 1, 2006, and the identification information is to be recorded in the scorebook. Dogs of breeds other than the German Shepherd Dog will be required to have a tattoo or microchip for entry in USA national and regional events, but not for entry in USA local events. Owners of dogs with microchips are responsible for providing the identification equipment. The only change resulting from this motion will be requiring identification for German Shepherd Dogs entered in local performance events."
Microchip is applicable for GSDs as well, not just tatoo. The only con of the microchip from what I can read is you have to provide the scanner if I'm reading correctly.

Wouldn't the clubs have a scanner then, if chipping's part of the ID requirements? Surely they're standardized?

Duh. You're right. I read that too fast! Not sure I'd rely on my club to have a scanner, though. What if you move, or just change clubs? Incidentally, my dog has both. A lot more people seem to have heard about chips (and how to track owners through them) than tatoos. So even though my pup came with his tatoo, I added the chip for peace of mind.

While I can't speak for clubs, most owners do not own scanners. Vets, breeders, and shelters have them. Chip scanners are pretty expensive. Home Again and Avid (I think that's the name) are the 2 major manufacturers of chips in the US. Outside the US I imagine there are any number of chip manufacturers and those chips will not be read by a Home Again or Avid scanner. We've bumped into this with our military clients. I guess you would have to have a scanner if your dog has a foreign chip.
