what are you currently doing for the send away to get an 8? do you have a video of the current level of send away performance so that we can properly assess what an 8 means to you? are you using food or toy for the send away? and which motivator are you using as primary motivation?

I'm not a pro, my dogs do cute tricks and bite a sleeve so take it for what its worth, I've been having good luck using two Kong balls and my assistant Brian(see signature link) I'll have the dog at the foos and give a ball to Brian in full view of the dog. I send Brian out with the ball about 30 plus yards and have him hold the ball out at arms lenght at his side. I give the go out command and Brian will drop or throw the ball when the dog gets to him, for the recall I give the Hier command and have the ball clearly visable and reward when the dog returns. This has worked for both my Sch dogs(I call them Sch dogs 'cuz they come from Sch lines) I cranked it up a bit and got them to turn around and come back about half way there. Later I'm going to do the send out sans ball then without Brian.
Of course they have what I think is Psychotic ball drive

I too am interested in what you are doing to train the send out now. Several of us in our training group just started the foundation work for the send out. Our trainer (Dave Blank) emphasises speed on all exercises including this one. I watched him trial his own dog for SchH2 (successfully) in November. Dave's dog was very fast on the send out. There was one other dog I would say might have been faster, but did NOT platz on the first command (or maybe even the second).
Dave only proofs the platz with the send out occassionally in training. The method he has found to work best separates the fast send out from the platz command. It makes total sense to me the way he explains how he achieves this. We use a "hanging tree" (not sure if that is standard terminology) to "hold" the reward for the dog.
I am a novice, so I'm not sure if this method is of interest. If it is, let me know.

We used that at the club as well and I tried it with little success, I think the dogs had a hard time seeing the ball so I use Brian for my "tree" who also feeds, treats, and plays with them

Hi Dennis. There is a big difference between the dog "knowing" it's there v. "believing" it's there. An important part of how we are training this ties to the dog's belief about what's at the other end of the field. So hard to explain. (and not easy to do either!)

If your dog sees Brian "the tree" there OK I can see the dog going out quick for the ball.I could never teach my dog nor have I with a live person, no way he'd forget about the tug , ball and get the guy.
But any way, I 'm very curious to see when brian isn't there what will happen.
I taught my dogs, the send out with simply putting him in a sit(stay) I walk away straight ahead and put the tug on the ground starting at 6 ft away from the dog and ending with 100 feet later and so on.Everytime I would walk back to my dog (in a sit) I would excite him by saying "wheres the tug where is it"holding his collar and as he would show tons of excitement, I'd say "voraus w/pointing the direction" and let go.We do that for days of training the exercise, to where more and more you do it without him seing you put it down, but the fact is your dog as to be crazy for the tug or ball or what ever you decide to use in order to get the speed and will. But I don't use anyone at the other end of the field.I will put the tug in place (after he understand the exercise)before getting him out of the car and then later apply it during my obedience routine ect...I am teaching that right now to my 1 year old, actually starting next week. But my 3 year old does his voraus fast and accurate.I hope I made sense to you guys.Hard to write it out.
I also have heard of people using live rabbits in a cage.

I'll keep you posted on that, We also got the find Brian game, Brian hides with the ball or food behind something, and the dogs go find him. Erika we got to sit and bark, Roxie just does the "Happy Dance" so we are still working on that. I wish I had more time to persue dog sport properly but with three kids and a job with a screwy schedule, I can't. So I glean what I can, the park is just around the corner if I can get my dogs to do most of the stuff I see in videos and the assistance of my helper Brian I'm happy.

Dennis as long as you're having fun and see the progress you are looking for, I think you are on the right path. For my male Yaggo that would be suicide for the guy that I would use as my target for a voraus exercise, but funny to mention to the guys on Monday I wonder which one will volunteer to hold the tug for us
