My 9 month old is approximatetly 10 days into her first heat...and has a soft tissue injury to her right front leg, so has been on a limited exercise regimine.
My 4 year old also had a rough couple of days as her digestive problems started acting up again. She's been a grumpy girl & just doesn't seem quite right again yet.
(Can you tell this has been an interesting weekend as far as the dogs go around here...yeesh!)
The two dogs are allowed together for limited amounts of time and are really good in the house together, ignoring each other for the most part...doing their own thing.
We had an issue the other day, in which my older girl snapped at the pup and there have been a few instances when she has had some stiff posturing & hackles up since then.
My question is: Could this be related to Kira's being in heat?
I watch the dynamics between them and practice good leadership, so I am dismayed to see this behavior out of my older dog.
Any comments?

Eek! I'm sorry your dogs are having problems.
I have 0 experience with intact females, but I know that my pup's breeder had similar problems with her two females.
The older female (retired from breeding) was fine with the new female puppy until the puppy started getting old enough to breed.
They got into several extremely vicious fights over breeding rights (always initiated by the older female) and the younger female got quite a few stitches as a result. They could never be together again after that.
Good luck with your dogs.

Should mention that the older female is spayed...and I have no males. These spats haven't been serious, but I don't like the change in behavior. There has also been a change in routine...I've been off work for the last four days. Wonder if that has an effect....

Melissa ,
I hate to tell you this but your females will not be able to run together anymore or for long.Consider it the end of a good relationship between the two.It makes no difference that one of them is 9 months and the other 4 yrs. The 4 year old will if given the chance kill or injure her. What you saw that day was the start and it will not go away.
I have the same thing here with 2 males, my best friend as 2 females and funny but the same age as yours when one night, his older female (who had played and run with the younger one) attacked the younger one and almost killed her had he not jumped in(my friend). They have been seperated ever since and what is tricky , you will see them wag there tail at one another but don't be fooled.Keep them seperated from now on.I have 2 males that were good buddies but as soon as the youngest one turned one year the relationship ended , my 3 year old male wants nothing to do with the other.Sad cause my youngest male wants so bad to play with him.I wish you luck...

I don't know if I agree with you about that Angelique...the intitial incident was over a bone that was accidentally left out. She would have reacted in the same way to my other dog and yet the two of them have lived peacefully together for almost 5 years & my other dog is a dominant terrier.
The other incidents have been mild, just warning signs that my older girl wants to be left alone. I am considering taking my older female to the vet this week though. I can't put my finger on it, but something is just not right with her.
Otherwise, they have been together with no problems both in the house and in the yard. Even during their yard time, I am not seeing any of the same behavior or dominant posturing. No other noticeable changes in their behavior...

I keep my two working bitches seperated. You are waiting for an expensive accident to happen. It's not if, it's when.

John - who said my girls are working dogs? They are not.
I do believe that some dogs cannot live together and eventually that could happen between my own dogs. I have also owned female dogs, in pairs or in threes for my entire life, and never had a problem. I find it a little disconcerting that the only advice I have gotten is to keep my dogs separated, however.

Melissa,
It's all up to you........
I am simply giving you a scenario to think about, you don't have to agree or disagree, just think about it, I wish you and your dogs a safe environment ,nothing less

Melisaa take a deep breath...
John was referring to HIS working dogs.
Not once did you mention a bone, and for you to say "was it heat"
uhhh a bone would have been a dead give away to YOU.
What do you want to hear??? Keep them together they will learn to get along?......It doesn't happen that wya.You say you've had pairs of three that got along, ecttt.
Maybe you are the expert

Yikes...
I am certainly not any kind of an expert.
However, I think it is perfectly fair for my feelings to be a little hurt at this point, but perhaps, I did not express myself the way I perceived. Always hard to do with a keyboard and I apologize if I came off this way.
And I DO understand that the initial incident was caused by the bone...I was more interested in the further 2 incidents, occuring a day later...and what changes my pup being in heat might cause, something I am not at all familiar with. I guess I should have been more specific.
