Hello everyone sorry to say I just left the emergency room where my 7 year old male gsd is undergoing surgery. His stomach turned on him today and he is in surgery right now to see if we can save him.I would like to talk to anyone who has had personal experience with this happening to their own dogs.Thank You
Steve-
I am so very sorry to hear about your dog. We just lost our almost 7 year old GSD in October to bloat. Had no idea - he was fine at 2 AM and by 4 he was taking his last breath. The emergency vet told us that even if we had known what was happening the surgery may not have worked and if it did there was a more than 75% chance it would recur. The recovery would be very painful. I'm not trying to be negative but this was my experience. My prayers are with you and your dog. I hope for the best for you.
Keep hope, Steven. It's an awful thing and you must be really really worried. If you want some quick answers, use the search on Bloat and you should find a lot of info...then you could PM the posters for more specific info.
Actually, just saw that you have been on the board since '05...you probably know all of this. Keep us posted and I'm wishing the best for you.
Did the dog have any symptoms or did it just become horrible almost instantly?
Steven:
Think positive thoughts! It is possible for them to survive this. My GSD-Malamute mix bloated twice in his lifetime, once without torsion and once with torsion of the stomach. Both times we were able to identify it quickly and get him to the emergency vet clinic. The second time he bloated was with torsion of the stomach. It was pretty bad, but he recovered after the surgery and lived without complications for many years after that.
Let me know if you have any specific questions you need answered and I'll try to help (although I'm certainly no expert on the subject).

Just got off the phone with the vet ,Max survived the surgery they had to romove his spleen he also had a lot of internal bleeding so he might need a blood transfusion. His stomach was turned so the doctor told me that he fixed his stomach and sutured it so that it could never turn again ,that is if he survives this horrible event.I can not see him untill tommorrow.
steve, i am so sorry. a good friend of mine lost two of her dogs to bloat this past summer, and i know how frightening this is. but your dog made it through! think positive!
Steven, I can imagine your anxiety. Make sure of the care he'll receive at the vet's, like will he be watched through the nights if he needs to stay longer. Sending all good wishes for you and Max.
