Ok folks, I'm going to post, ask your opinions about something that's been on my mind.
I plan to be getting a new pup soon, doing a lot of "homework" of late. I've been really introspective about some things and one issue I've thought about is my weakness(es) and how this can or will affect my leadership ability with a working line shepherd.

My greatest weaknesses, IMO, is that I smoke cigarettes daily, *only* outside my home. I've tried to quit several times over the years, so I do know I am closer, and have patches I purchased over the holiday...OK...I *KNOW* I'm better off quitting.

But, this is my question. Is it possible for a dog to lose respect and/or to be able to detect and take advantage of this particular "weakness" in its human leader? My first dog preyed on fear in others, their weakness. Can anyone shed some light on this one? Perhaps I'm thinking too much.

uh, your pulling our leg, aren't you ?
I got loads of personal weaknesses and bad habits, I don't think my dogs love me any less and they don't nag me to quit any of them

Congrats on quitting! I'm about 2 months into quitting.
Sorry I don't have a good answer to your question.

My husband quit about 3 years ago, he had to use the perscription drug to do it. He tried gum, patches, etc. Cold turkey after 2 weeks of being on the drugs did it. Good luck, it's not easy.

And no, I don't think dogs care if you smoke or have a glass of wine with dinner or any other weakness or bad habit. If my dog barked at me every time I had a glass of wine he'd go hoarse.

I am sure your dog has no idea that smoking is a weakness. But, dogs owned by smokers do get cancer far more often then dogs owned by non-smokers, so keep the second hand smoke far away from the pup. I think it is a great time for you to quit, though. There is a new drug Chantix (Pfizer) that is supposed to be very effective in blocking cravings, far better then patches, gum or another drug used recently, the anti-depressant Zyban.

I quit 38yrs ago when they were 30-35 cents a pack. I'd freak out if I had to by a pack of the nasty things today cause I was smoking 2-3 packs a day.
With the dogs nose being so sensitive, that would be good enough reason to quit.

I'm with Dennis , I don't think any bad habits will dictate what leadership you'll have with your dog.
My weakness is chocolate and I don't think they care, if it was up to them they'd want me to share.
Cool you are trying to quit, good luck on it

Dennis! I was totally serious! LOL. Not pulling yer leg at all!
I think I started thinking too much, as the pup is still about 4 months out and I'm going crazy with no dog!

I was off on a tangent, too philosophical. Wondering if maybe smokers had a more difficult time with training *because* the dog sensed that as a weakness? It makes sense though that the dog would initially have to be trained to understand smoking as a weakness, otherwise how would he know?

I am looking for extreme ob in my next dog and training for SchH, so it will be a bit different than the 2 dogs I've raised in the past.

Hey, and thanks to all for the support in quitting--didn't mean for the thread to spiral into a smokers anonymous meeting though!

				Mhmmmmmmmmm.....cigarettes
I see what your saying. In some people(not all, this isn't a sweeping judgment)I guess it could be a sign of some psychological weakness. Like everyone else I don't think the dog has the ability to relate smoking to anything.

I was scared to death to smoke around my dogs. They could be across the yard and start sneezing from it.
