What are you feeding mom now?
How old are the puppies?
Have you searched this site to find this informaiton?
One thing that is pretty universal is helping mom keep her milk by making sure she drinks lots of water. You can use something like low sodium beef broth added to water to help the water be more enticing. I would boil chicken breasts in water and then use the water (after cool of course) for the mom this way I could control the amount of salt (none) that was in the water.
Then I would make chicken enchiladas with the chicken since I don't feed raw.
There is a lot of good information on nutrition on this site and in the forum and there are 2 trains of thought depending on whether or not you are feeding raw.
If the puppies are not being fed by the mom, then you can use Ed's formula for bottle feeding puppies which works really well. I had to nurse a pup out of a rescue litter and she did great on it.
There is a bit more information that is needed IMO before handing out advice.
Shari, how old are these puppies now and what breed?
What have you done so far?
that would help us figure out amounts and also what you can use on these pups. http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r77/cadogancna/
Thanks for the reply. She is a GSD. She had 4 pups on 1/6. All is going well. Just trying to keep ahead of things since this is her first litter and mine. I did hear about the beef or chicken broth but I was wondering about the sodium being to high. I do like the idea of boiling chicken (I was planning on enchiladas this week!) I am feeding her puppy food for large breeds right now.
I would NOT give calcium supplements, not to any dog unless the dog has eclampsia and it was prescribed by a vet!!! The things a dog needs nutritionally are always best obtained through foods, not supplementation if at all possible.
I would be adding nutrition rich foods to her diet, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, eggs, raw fatty meats.
Four pups should not be too taxing on her physically, so I wouldn't be increasing her food a lot right now unless she is thin. Puppies really start to drain mom between the 3rd and 6th week.
If you are worried about sodium, then just add warm water to her food. I have a litter born the same day as yours, and I add several cups of h20 to each meal in addition to keeping water available at all times. My female has a large litter (10) and she is a bit underweight right now so I am feeding her 6 times a day.
If she feeds kibble ,I don't know what kind but doubt it has all the nutrient a lactating female needs.
We gave a female we had a while back that had an unplanned litter calcium tabs that our vet gave us and did very well on them. She had a hard pregancy and was not doing well afterwards....maybe the calcium tabs don't apply to a more healthy dog, but it sure helped our female.
Thanks to all who have replied! All is going well. Mom is definately thin. I have been feeding her 4 times a day. I can easily add those extras! Cottage cheese, eggs etc. Thanks for the tips. She has been drinking well and I have added chicken stock or water to the dry food.
