My dog loves the tennis ball, but I think her favourite toy is an old pillow case I gave her. I tied a couple knots in it and we play tug and she goes crazy. She also loves old plastic pop bottles.
I used to have a teaser ball (http://www.leerburg.com/toy.htm#teaser) but she started to eat the plastic so I threw it away.
She isn't real big on kongs unless they are filled with Natural Peanut Butter.
Do you guys have any suggestions on toys that can take a beating. My girl is in need of some new ones.

Thick sticks are his favorite - my German Shredder Dog keeps me well supplied with mulch. I use a lot of cheap/free toys -- paper bags, empty plastic drink bottles (1/2 gallon or 1 gallon size), junk mail, the cable installer's work order papers, cardboard boxes that Leerburg obedience videos were shipped in, an old plastic stepstool (this has lasted 10 months - the legs just gradually get shorter).
Watch out for those tennis balls, though - there's info on this site about the glue reacting with dogs' saliva and eating away at teeth, plus the risk of choking and ingestion.

We have a variety of toys, for just play we use a tennis ball launcher or ball on a string. For something to do in the outside runs we have "horse toys" and x-large kongs. For indoor crate time we use gum gum bars and large kongs and finally for training we have jute tugs (all sizes), rolled towels, lengths of pipe and hose. For the food reward it is normally Natural Balance Lamb and Rice pieces.
I have replaced Rawhide chews with celery lengths and carrots and recreational bones.

Kevin I forget ,what is your dogs age?
Tennis ball are the most dangerous toy to use.Las Vegas had some of their k9 over the years die from tennis lodge in their throat passage and it blocked the air supply to the dog.
I love using kong at the park or at home but on the training field I love using small tugs, some look like minnie sacks, better for the dog to hold and easy to tug with your dog ,slip in your pocket. The kong on the field is hard to target straight or bounce at a distance you may not want, cause it can bounce off so far, but for play else where I love it and all my GSD love their kong. But my favorite is this little tug I have with me at all times, like whenwe are at a place where its crowded(like pet store) I can take the tug out of my pocket and make my dog hold it and get his mind off other distractions.
They also love plastic bottles, also my small(12" to 15") cut pieces of old hose, great toys and cheap.
But my favorite is the small tug I carry.

Tennis ball are the most dangerous toy to use.
I agree with this although I use them with the launcher. I do have so larger tennis balls that Kong makes and those are what I try and stick with. The dogs pretty much just fetch them and do not chew on them on the return and they are not allowed to have them when unattended. It is just that the launcher works SO well when I need to wear a dog out somewhat.
I will say that sticks would be a bigger worry to me, having seen and cared for the injuries they can inflict.

Solid rubber balls from Jeffers Pet Supply. They are the size of a tennis ball, and nearly indestructable. And the best part is they only cost about $2 each. They do make a larger size as well.
I use a soft "frisbe" from Duluth Trading Company when I want somthing that floats. These need to be put away after playtime though.

Yes I agree Carol I don't like sticks either,I don't like my kids playing with them and the dogs.
I have seen the launchers they look like fun.I might have to try that, right now my launcher is hubbie, he always makes fun of how I throw so now he does it

I'm glad I said something about sticks. Looks like I'm being outvoted, with good reason. I had figured thick sticks would be okay - something they would play with "in the wild", but will defer to greater experience. Are they okay to use as throwing / retrieving toy, though? I assume the injuries would be primarily from swallowing pieces?
Thanks
