I have several of Ed's DVDs, but I just had to give a "DVD report" on the Dominant and Aggressive Dog DVD. I think this is the most important DVD I have to date. Definitely one to get whether you have a pup or an adult dog, working line or not. I should have bought it before my pup came to live with me at 8 1/2 weeks. He's now 7 months old. I had a sense of total relief watching this DVD cause at one time I thought I had a Chris Duhon or Will Rambeau or Kevin Shedahl dog and wondered if I was up to the task. I planted my feet a while back, and this DVD further confirmed and established me. I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote in a different thread about it:
"I just got Ed's DVD on Dominant and Aggressive Dogs and I would highly recommend it even if your dog won't fall into that category. It's filled with wonderful information based on Ed's excellent understanding of dogs and the multitude of different aggressive drives. One mistake I made was not getting this DVD much sooner. The understanding it gives you and the "what to do" and "what not to do" is priceless. To me it's the kind of understanding anyone who has a working line dog needs to know, aggressive or not. I've been able to pinpoint the mistakes I made with my pup now because of this DVD."
Thank you Ed.

AMEN, Sandy <:-)
For instance, I think every Akita breeder should give a copy of that DVD http://www.leerburg.com/301.htm to all their puppy buyers -- and this goes for ANY breed that typically displays hard, fearless, bold, "alpha" temperament traits, tending to become dominant (or possibly aggressive) with improper management, training & handling...
How anyone can live without a dog is beyond me... |

Life as Marchosias knows it is about to end, and that's probably a good thing! I don't know what I would have done without the Dominant Dog DVD.

Hehe Joe!
So far I think I've been doing pretty much everything right according to the DVD but not done watching yet. Small inconsistencies on my part really and the training is more for me than him I think. Life will end as he knows it however since I got the dominant dog collar to go with the dvd.
I think maybe I am going at this training from the wrong angle though. Perhaps I should wait for Ed to make a Dealing with Dense and Possibly Retarded Dogs DVD with chapters like 'What to do when your dog runs into a wall', 'Is he misbehaving or did he just forget what you asked him to do?' and 'How to stop your dog from throwing a ceramin food bowl in the air and hitting himself in the head with it'.
How's your pup doing? Hope you are all well and his tummy has recovered fully. Marchosias' favorite toy is still that ball on a string you got him like a year and a half ago! It's the only thing he hasn't managed to obliterate.
He really likes to bark at air since we moved back to the big city. I am always made very aware that someone may have walked down my block from the other side of the house when Marchosias is crated. Working on that next I guess. Soon he will be wearing a bark collar, e-collar, prong and dominant dog collar and maybe a couple of flat collars for the 80's swatch watch effect.
I HAVE finally got him to 100% in ignoring the snarling aggressive neghborhood mongrels people keep as pets here and allow them to drag them all over the streets lunging at passerby and other dogs.
There is a feeling of smugness one has when your dog is the only one not being a complete dink (this is only in public mind he he is superdink at home hehe).
You won't believe how many people have tried to drag their rabid foaming at the mouth barking and snarling dogs away semi apologetically saying 'Oh he's just playing'. One guy tried to give me a lesson on why growling dogs are actually playing and then proceeded to tell me he bred Corsos, pit bulls and King Shepherds which is why he was such an experienced trainer. He was very special. I felt really bad for his dogs.
I think I should buy 10 more copies of the Dominant Dog dvd and hand it out to people in my neighborhood.
Thanks as always Ed for another awesome DVD!

Harley's tummy is doing much better. I've been supplementing his meals with Fastrack, and that seems to have made a big difference. Over the last 2 1/2 months or so, he has only had one overnight accident in his crate, and I think that was related to when I switched him off the prepackaged raw to chicken quarters.
He still has some guarding issues when I feed him raw chicken as opposed to the prepackaged Bravo Raw Diet, but I use a crate in the basement to feed him. I'm not going to get something like that keep me from feeding him a raw diet with bones, especially when the solution is simple as giving him some peace and quiet when he eats. It has just been 6 days since I punted the Bravo, so maybe over time he won't assign such a high value to the RMBs. The trainer at the Dobie rescue said that the issue may go away as Harley gets older and more comfortable, or it may never go away.
Other than the food issue, Harley has been a great dog. He's a very eager learner. I saw a video here where Cindy did an "agility warmup" with her dog by having it do figure-8's between her legs. I thought it looked neat, so I taught Harley how to do it. People get a kick out of it. Also, if I ask him, "Who's a brave dog?" he'll run behind me, pop his head between my legs, and look right up into my eyes. It's hilarious. I even taught him to jog on our treadmill everyday.
He's super social around other dogs and knows to match his energy level with the dog he is playing with. People have been amazed at how well he plays with little dogs and puppies (gently, if you can believe it) and yet can still scrap with the bigger dogs too. I also recently discovered that if he is running and playing with other dogs, I can call him back to me and he'll actually do it, thanks to Ed Frawley and the E-Collar Training DVD.
I'm glad Marchosias still loves playing with that toy! Does he still swing it around and smack himself in the head with it? I wish I got to see a little more of him before you moved to NYC. Who knows, maybe Harley and he would be buddies if you were still around!
I know what you mean about wanting to hand out Leerburg DVDs. Fortunately, I've met mostly well-adjusted dogs and owners, where the difference has only been varying degrees of obedience. Almost everyone who has been around Harley has opened up to the idea of using an e-collar for training. They can't believe how well he minds, even when he's not wearing the e-collar. In the back of my mind, I think back to how I followed the two-week collar conditioning period and how that is paying off in spades.

Harley sounds like a peach, glad he is doing well! I think they would have been great friends. I'm going to pick up a treadmill myself next week.
And yes Marchosias often swings his toys around and brains himself with them. He has a very hard skull apparently. He is really calm on the tug but everything else is fair game to shake like a maniac.

I so agree with you. Lurking on the Leerburg forum off and on for a couple of years before getting my first working line GSD, I thought I knew what to expect, but I was wrong. What I didn't know was how bold and strong and confident "I" had to be with this type of dog, even having had GSDs all my life. They were docile compared to the guy I have now. GSDs have always been my favorite breed and have never had any trouble with biting me at all, ever. At least now I feel equipped (inside where it counts ). I am so excited about having the kind of dog I have. He meets my expectations of a GSD and THEN SOME. It's the "then some" that took me by surprise So basically, I knew the breed, just didn't differentiate between the working line and the whatever other sable darlings I had had.
