My 8 1/2 wk old Dobe has 10 formed stools a day and has difficulty passing them. At the vet today her stool was neg. and her anal glands expressed, did not help. I feed her prairie natures variety with some added water and have been supplementing with pumkin. The vet suggested changing her food and suggested purina one ( no way) and help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Why are you supplementing with pumpkin? To try to loosen her stools? I would think it is too much fiber for her = causes more, firm stool.
The experts will be answering soon though....

Pumpkin can normalize the stool in both directions.
But I'm with you, Alison, that this doesn't sound like a mild case of constipation.
I don't know that food. I do know that now, with two people posting very similar issues, I'd be trying something different. Is there a lot of rice in that food, possibly?
(Ain't the internet great?)
She's not presently impacted, right? (I'd be asking the vet about considering an enema if she was.)
Does the dog have a clean bill of health as far as parasites go? Is the dog eating pebbles or dirt or the like?

Oh LORD, am I dumb!
I am so sorry, but apparently the OP, Laura Silva, posted about constipation with her pup on another thread at a different time...AND I JUST LINKED TO IT!! I didn't recognize her name, but I had done a search on "pumpkin" and that seemed relevant (obviously!!).
I swear since I've gotten this pup I think I'm losing intelligence while he's gaining it!
Very sorry to all...obviously this explains why "two people" had problems with the same food! <grins sheepishly>
(At least I caught it before everyone else did and teased me to death!!)

Hmmm. Well, I didn't notice either!
But let's all pick on Amber anyway. It's rainy and dreary here where I am and teasing Amber sounds more diverting than the work I'm supposed to be doing.
So, Laura, I think I would still go with trying different food. I'd also consider a little produce to get things moving, plus plenty of fluid (more water in the food bowl). Is the dog on salmon oil every day, and walks? Produce can bulk it up, water and fat can soften it, and exercise can get it moving.
All JMO, depending on vet clearance about parasites and blockage.

And I hope the puppy experts will see the thread! My own experience is with adult dogs.

I found Prairie food; which version is it, Laura? Chicken and Brown Rice, maybe?

It's chicken, the vet checked her out she is not impacted. She does get plenty of exercise. I am going to look into another natural food, my other 14 month old Dobe does fine I Prairie so I was hoping she would to but I guess not.

Laura, the first few ingredients of that food is "Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Barley, Oatmeal,...". First I have no clue what chicken "meal" is, but the next 3 ingredients are grains and it could be your puppy isn't digesting them (have read dogs don't digest grains well anyway).
Another side note: when my puppy had diarrhea, the vet said to give rice with cottage cheese to bind it up. It worked. Rice, then, can be considered to be binding.
Also, when my puppy was once constipated, my search on this forum led me to a thread where Karo Syrup was mentioned as a laxative: http://www.leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=134&Number=77293&Searchpage=1&Main=8338&Words=Karo+syrup+&topic=0&Search=true#Post77293 It's Mike Russell's post and he gives the dosage. I used it on my pup, and it took literally 5 minutes for it to work, and it wasn't diarrhea, just moved everything along, so if you use this, make sure the pup is outside afterwards.
