Any thoughts on what character traits and/or behaviors are most reliably transmitted from one generation to the next? Do you think there is a greater chance that desired traits will be transmitted if they are coming through the paternal vs. maternal sides? Thanks.
When I was doing my research, I had heard not to discount the temperament of the bitch. Apparently she can pass certain insecurities or fears to the pups. I read that orphaned pups who's lineage wouldn't suggest insecurity or fear still developed these qualities frequently when nursed and cared for by a fearful mother as opposed to a steady mother.
Incidentally, this is one reason that I've heard that pet store puppies can have these issues (aside from bad genetics). If the mother is stressed, the pups will learn that.
I'll let breeders speak up, but I did find it interesting that there isn't as much attention to the mother as much as the father (often I hear about the sire of a dog, but rarely about the mother). Perhaps because the females don't win championships like the males do? I have no idea. Or maybe there is as much attention and I've just missed it?
Anyway, I played it safe and made sure the momma was a calm, happy mother.
I definitely think people discount the bitch too much. But then of course there are people in the know, who UNDERSTAND that a good bitch is worth 10 good males, and have great puppies because of it. In fact, I prefer a breeder who pays MORE attention to the bitch than the sire, and the best dog I have ever owned came from a breeder who was so eager to go on about the bitch that I had to ask (near the end of our conversation) exactly who the sire was!
That bitch (the one I bought) worked like a male, even when she was in heat. EVERY positive trait of her mother definitely passed down to her, bar nothing.
She did LOOK like a brindle version of a spitting image of her father, though... But otherwise she was all her momma!
I don't know if there's any truth to it, but when I was younger at going to dog shows, all I ever heard was that the sire passes on looks and the mom passes on temperament...
Although, if you can pass on aversion to crates, my dog definitely got that from his sire, who broke all his teeth trying to chew his way out of a wire crate. Yikes.
