Hi, What have your experiences been with buying heartworm pills online ? Are they legit or could they be counterfeit? In all states are you required to have a doctors prescription? I have recently moved and only have a few doses left, I would prefer not to have to do a vet visit to get a new prescription(as required by law in california(I believe). Also for you northern california folks, do you give your dog year round heartworm? Also do you prefer interceptor, heartguard or another brand. Thanks in advance...

I do use it year-round (I'm about halfway between San Francisco and Monterey), because we have no months that stay reliably cold enough to guarantee no mosquitoes.
I use Heartguard, I get it just walking in at my vet's (no appointment needed), and the reason I get it there is so I have the company's guarantee (which I don't think you get unless you are buying from a vet who keeps records).
Also, I asked my vet if he would match a printed internet price, and he said sure. So I printed it out, and there ya go.

Sheila,
PetMeds is one online pharmacy I would say to avoid. They do have good prices but Merial, for example, will not guarantee their product, Heartguard, if it's sold through PetMeds.
VetCentric, on the other hand, is a reputable online pharmacy. Many of our clients use Drs Foster & Smith but I don't know if Merial, Bayer, et al will guarantee their products through them.
There are counterfeit products out there and it is extremely difficult to tell the fake from the real so be very careful who you buy from.
Your dog CAN get heartworm in northern California so a preventitive is a good idea.
Bayer just brought out a brand new product...Advantage Multi. It is a topical that controls fleas, heartworm, hookworm, whipworm, and (I believe) roundworm.
