I have searched some of the forum topics on pad injuries and gotten some pretty good info, but I'm looking for a bit more.
I find that in addition to salt exposure sometimes the extreme cold alone will cause damage to my dog's feet. I have to keep a silicone based skin conditioner on my own hands as a barrier between my skin and the elements (wetness and cold temps) to prevent cracking; can this same type of preventative care be used on a dogs pads to prevent cracking?
My boyfriend was recently babysitting his aunt's dog, and she had a product that was sprayed onto her pads before she went outside. I went along with them for a walk, we were out there for an hour and she was fine....whereas when I take my dogs out, they're limping after about 10 minutes.
I forget what the product was called, knowing my boyfriend's aunt though, it probably came from petsmart.
EDIT: I skimmed your post and missed some important points- I'm not sure if this product prevents cracking, although it might!
Mushers Wax works great it conditions and protects at the same time. It also works well for slick floors to help build the dogs confidence and teach him to take off slower. It gives just a little extra traction.

Some days you're the dog, and some days you're the hydrant.
you can get it on line or most of your larger pet stores, PetSmart etc. it's usualy about $8.00 for a small jar but it lasts quite a while. I have never had any problems with it staining the carpets either. Good luck.

It's called: Musher's Secret. Cost is anywhere between $8 - $12 depending on where you buy it. It comes in a white small plastic jar with the top of the lid blue with white lettering. Works great.
I ran into a product they sell at a big hunting store chain. Can't remember the name, but what struck me funny was it said it was harmful if ingested. I find it shocking they would sell something to put on dogs pads that they can't ingest-do they think they're not going to lick?
